How does the EBA IT community help Ukraine during the war?

18/ 05/ 2022
In these difficult times, Ukrainians have shown the world what true unity and mutual assistance are. For a common goal, business, citizens, and the country have united into one essence that opposes war. Therefore, we at the European Business Association continue to share stories of how companies across different industries help the country. Now it is the turn for the IT – we collected stories of help from the EBA IT Committee companies. N-iX Since the full-scale war, the company has raised more than UAH 24,258,000 through the N-iX Army Assistance Fund. The company managed to help many cities in Ukraine, including Chernihiv, Bucha, Brody, Vasylkiv, Pokrovsk, Avdiivka, Toretsk, Mariupol, and others: N-iX purchased 20 SUVs and minibusses, ambulances for military and humanitarian needs. The vehicles are already helping our defenders and volunteers in eastern Ukraine. More than 40 Starlink stations have been transferred to different parts of Ukraine, where it is most needed – to Donetsk, Chernihiv and Bucha territorial communities. Besides, Ukrzaliznytsia received 15 stations to be used at railway stations in settlements where there are problems with Internet connection. N-iX joined the purchase of thermal imaging equipment for the production of helicopters. The companys specialists also help the Air Intelligence Service with their expertise. More than 100 units of computer equipment were handed over for the needs of the Armed Forces, the Territorial Defense and the Ukrainian special services; N-iX ordered 200 bulletproof vests for the military – 12 sets have already been distributed among N-iX colleagues who joined the Armed Forces. Together with our colleagues, we raised UAH 974,000 in aid for N-iX specialists who joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. EPAM Ukraine Economic aid: A working economy is one of the most important components of victory. Therefore, companies, that now continue to do business and provide services, are approaching victory. IT business was able to adapt to the war and recover the fastest. More than 90% of IT specialists have returned to work. A working business can pay taxes in advance. ERAM alone paid UAH 50 million in advance in Q1 and the company also plans to pay taxes to the budget in Q2. Humanitarian aid: EPAM focuses on working with proven foundations that provide primarily humanitarian assistance. In total, more than UAH 21 mil was transferred to the Red Cross of Ukraine, Leleka, Razom, Krona, and Group 35. Namely, UAH 10 mil were allocated to the Red Cross of Ukraine to meet the medical needs of hospitals and the needs of migrants. Financial assistance is provided to local communities to cover the urgent needs of internally displaced persons in Lviv, Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Khmelnytsky oblasts, as well as to resume community activities in Sumy oblast. EPAM is an international company, so help comes from colleagues and clients from the West. With joint efforts, the company managed to purchase and transfer three ambulances that now transport the wounded, as well as medical equipment. A special Ukraine Aid Fund has also been established. Aid to IT specialists: Assistance is also provided at the specialist level. The recent charity campaign “EPAM stands with Ukraine” raised over UAH 900,000. The funds went to the accounts of Ukrainian humanitarian aid funds (Caritas Ukraine, Together, and Group35) Many EPAM IT professionals help Ukraine not only economically. They have joined the territorial defense, the Armed Forces, and volunteers. For example, they help the military, and migrants, as well as bring products, medicines, and things to the hot spots. Educational aid: From the first days of the war, the company transferred equipment to those who need it most – to the evacuated educational institutions, territorial administrations, etc. Support of educational institutions. EPAM, together with AWS specialists, has helped 10+ educational partners from universities in the east and south maintain critical infrastructure by transferring data to a secure cloud environment. This will help to quickly restore the learning process. The company has resumed the work of EPAM University corporate training programs and helped to master modern IT professions. They also launched a special program, IT Fundamentals for Ukrainian Switchers, which introduces the basics of computer science. The program is free and does not contain screening tests and is available to anyone who wants to join IT without previous experience. This is especially important during a period when some people have lost their jobs. Sigma Software The company had a contingency plan, and it worked: Sigma Software took most people along with their families and pets from Kharkiv, Sumy, Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and small towns to a safe place. The companys volunteer group, organized in the early hours of the war, went beyond the possible. For example, evacuation buses from Kharkiv kept going even on the most challenging days. The company provided all its evacuated employees with temporary housing and everything necessary for work and normal life. Sigma Software has long leased several recreation centers in Morshyn (270 places) and Truskavets (150 places) and arranged coworking spaces there for comfortable work with full administrative and technical support. Currently, more than 95% of people have been transported to safe locations and have been able to return to work. About 20% of people went abroad: to Poland, Hungary, Germany, and Sweden. There are those who did not want to leave their cities and still live in Kharkiv, Kyiv. Those who joined the Armed Forces or the Defense Forces retain their workplaces. Payments to specialists are made regularly. More than five years ago, Sigma Software registered its own charity to support numerous social initiatives. On February 24, 2022, the fund started working in new directions, namely the assistance to the population and the military. Specialists from Sigma Software, IdeaSoft, Kharkiv IT Service Company became the main coordinators for that. It all started as a continuation of the business continuity plan, which provided for the evacuation of specialists. At the same time, Sigma Software began receiving requests from citizens for evacuation assistance. It was difficult to stand off in such conditions. Therefore, the companies joined the evacuation of citizens, and today more than 1.5 thousand people have been evacuated. Those who remain in hotspots for any reason also need help. Medicines, necessities, childrens goods, food –  from the first days people felt the lack of these goods. Among the specialists of Sigma Software Group, many volunteers help the population and the army daily. It would be strange for companies not to support them in this matter. From the first day, the company together with specialists donated to support various projects. Thus, nearly UAH 10 mil were collected and transferred to the Come Back Alive Foundation. UAH 500,000 were sent to the Lviv IT cluster to support refugees and taxes were paid in advance. In total, Sigma Software, IdeaSoft, and their customers have donated more than $ 2.5 mil for a variety of causes. However, many places need specific help: through the charity fund, the company helps people in trouble and the defenders. As of today, the fund has spent more than $ 320,000 on evacuation, purchase, and delivery of humanitarian aid, assistance to refugees, and the Armed Forces. Besides, the Swedes for Ukraine portal has recently been launched to help find free housing for IDPs in Sweden. The initiator of the portal was Dan Olofsson, a famous Swedish businessman, and philanthropist. His Danir Group together with Sigma Software quickly developed a portal where Ukrainians coming to Sweden will be able to find temporary housing. The portal enables the Swedes with vacant housing to post information about them on the portal and invite Ukrainian refugee families to stay in their homes. Accommodation will be provided free of charge for the first three months of your stay. Also, Sigma Software and their customer and partner Bezyl have created a Ukrainian version of the application to support the mental health of Ukrainians. Sigma Software has been a technical partner of Bezyl for two years. During that period, the companys specialists were involved in developing an application that supports US Army veterans and people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). When Esther Howard, founder of Bezyl Inc., saw the scale of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine, she decided to make the Bezyl app available to Ukrainians to help them get the support needed. Sigma Software specialists gladly joined the localization work. You can download the Bezyl App on the App Store and Google Play. Sigma Software continues to develop its corporate educational direction and helps everyone to discover the IT world. Based on Sigma Software University, it launched a set of social courses for family and friends of our colleagues in March. The programs cover todays trend areas: Basics of PM, BA, .NET, JS, Basics of databases, recruiting and HR, and software testing. Over 2,000 registrations were received in two weeks. Training in most of the programs has already begun. Since the full-scale war, classes have resumed on programs for beginners, namely, camps and internships in the areas of NODE. JS, Angular, Java, PHP, Big Data, Support and .NET, GameDev. For those wishing to delve into blockchain technology, a set for the Solidity for beginners course (https://bit.ly/3OAjxEP) is currently open, it will begin in May, and all funds raised will be used to help the Armed Forces. The institution accommodates 33 children. Food, various hygiene products, and clothes were purchased and transferred to them. In almost one hour, Luxoft managed to close the fundraiser for the Zaporizhia Regional Clinical Childrens Hospital for UAH 110,786. Many children from Mariupol are being evacuated to that hospital. The company has closed the need to purchase pen syringes, a critical vacuum aspirator for wound healing. Fundraising was carried out through the KOLO Charitable Foundation. As part of the global initiative Chess for Charity, our winner Yuri Lugosh – Luxoft Software Developer, donated his prize of 2000 USD to the HEART TO HEART fund. The donation was used to purchase medical equipment for children with hearing impairments at the Kherson Regional Childrens Hospital, as well as consumables and medicines designed to save and support lives. Since February 24, Luxoft has not only not had any redundancies, but on the contrary, it hires more people. In March, 46 specialists joined the company. In April, the company increased its pace even more and provided even more jobs for Ukrainians. The company considers the continued development of its business here in Ukraine as a crucial task. In this way, we contribute to supporting the economy of our state in the fight against a common enemy. Luxoft has opened seven new offices in Ukraine: in Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytsky, two in Lviv, and in Reni, Odesa region. In total, they cover the job needs of 150 relocated professionals. BAKOTECH BAKOTECH transferred more than UAH 3 mil to the army and charitable foundations. On the financial front, the company is trying to attract more humanitarian and military aid. If we talk about employees who went to serve in the Armed Forces and the TRO, BAKOTECH provided them with the necessary equipment – from thermal imagers to clothing. A Coalition of Distributors of Ukraine was established together with BAKOTECH colleagues. The main task of the Coalition is to help companies and manufacturers of IT solutions that have any ties with the aggressor country to stop any activity in the russian and belarusian markets as soon as possible. BAKOTECH management uses all its international contacts and connections to disseminate information about the situation in Ukraine and to attract international financial assistance from foreign partners for the needs of the Armed Forces and volunteer organizations. There has been significant progress in this regard –  the donated funds amount to hundreds of thousands of euros. BAKOTECH vendors also did a lot: they created volunteer organizations, donated, and helped to find equipment outlets for the Armed Forces. BAKOTECH vendors also provide free licenses to Ukrainian companies for their products and professional assistance, and they cooperate with the government. And most importantly, BAKOTECH continues to work. All workers are in relatively safe places and ready to work to support the state. GlobalLogic The company has invested significant resources to support its specialists and the people of Ukraine. The safety and well-being of specialists is a key priority of the company, so all GlobalLogic Ukraine specialists received unscheduled payments, as well as assistance in moving, accommodation, and psychological support. GlobalLogic continues to pay all compensation to its specialists as usual. Since the beginning of the war, assistance from GlobalLogic to Ukraine and Ukrainians amounted to half a billion hryvnias (this amount continues to grow). Besides, the companys engineers are closing various requests from volunteers on their own and have already raised more than 8 million hryvnias at their own expense. To encourage the companys partners around the world to join in helping Ukraine, a donation platform has been set up on WeSpire, which has now raised more than $ 135,000 for such Ukrainian foundations as Nova Ukraine, Razom, Revived Soldiers Ukraine, and others. GlobalLogic pays the commission for these transfers. Besides, the company continues to support education in Ukraine. An IT Basics Course was held as part of the GlobalLogic Education program. GlobalLogic trainers and mentors shared the basic knowledge and skills needed to start a career in the IT industry. The course was attended by students of various specialties from all over Ukraine. Course materials and details are available at the link. On May 23, the career guidance course for high school students IT Choice will start. We want to help students in grades 9-11 to understand in which direction they can realize their potential in IT. Participation in the course is free. GlobalLogic has also launched a series of educational webinars on a number of topics that will help during the war: from psychology to medicine, from cybersecurity to life safety. Videos are available at the link. GlobalLogic also took care of childrens leisure time with a series of Kids Space webinars about Ukraine, during which children can learn more about Ukrainian mythology, fairy tales, and more. Videos can be found in a playlist. SoftServe SoftServe has been supporting Ukraines economy since the first days of the war. In February, the company transferred a total of UAH 50 million in taxes in advance so that additional revenues to the state budget would strengthen the economy. SoftServe also allocated UAH 12 mil for assistance in various areas related to the war, and later another 22 million hryvnias from the companys management. Separately, the companys employees have collected 2 million hryvnias and continue to collect significant sums even now. Customers, partners and employees also made more than $ 400,000 in donations from abroad. Most of these funds were directed to the Open Eyes Corporate Charitable Foundation, which procures essentials and humanitarian aid abroad, logistics and transportation to Ukraine and Ukrainian cities, namely, to the East. The fund has dozens of trucks and more than 300 tons of humanitarian aid, medicines, food, and computer equipment for refugees and the military. The company also helps with its own expertise. Hundreds of Softserves IT specialists work with NGOs and government agencies within the OpenTech project to develop digital products and solutions for them. Today, SoftServe volunteers have about 20 projects in progress. Greennet The companys most valuable asset is the team, as Greennet is an international IT system integrator that helps build IT infrastructure, and data networks for our customers – both public and private companies, critical infrastructure, the financial sector, and ISPs. Therefore, on February 24, the company rented several small hotels in safer regions and offered the team who want to leave Kyiv or send their families. To date, this is free for the Greennet team and their families. As of now, most people have returned to Kyiv or have plans to do so for the next couple of weeks. Despite the fact that since February 24 the Ukrainian office of Greennet has lost many sales, as most of our customers are Ukrainian companies, Greennet has retained the entire team, and fully retained salaries for the first half of this year; further action is planned according to the situation. However, the company hopes to retain most of the team. Some of the companys specialists are now defending the country with weapons, and Greennet provides them with all the necessary support and sincerely looks forward to their return unharmed to normal business life with victory! Even before the full-scale invasion began, the company began paying taxes in advance in early February. According to the company, this is an important part of helping the state from responsible business in such difficult times. In this context, the new tax regime of Diia.City, which the company joined in May, really helps companies like Greennet to get very attractive taxes and working conditions. Since February 24, Greennet has been providing all possible assistance to customers and partners: the first priority has been given to government agencies, the defense industry, and critical infrastructure, but commercial customers have also helped as much as they can as the role of pharmacy or supermarket is no less vital in the days of the war. Requests for help ranged from laptops, MFPs, hard drives, Starlink, and bulletproof vests to the services of engineers or IT security specialists to counter enemy cyberattacks. Greennet does its best to meet all requests. During this time, the company provided many consultations, equipment, and more than a hundred Starlink, which Greennet quickly bought for the needs of Ukraine at its own expense, which helped to ensure the work of the critical infrastructure. We continue to provide such assistance and will continue to do so as long as necessary for our victory. Greennet continues to work, supporting our Ukrainian team, the state, and the Armed Forces. The company continues to invest in our country even in difficult times with faith in the close victory and successful future of Ukraine!

In these difficult times, Ukrainians have shown the world what true unity and mutual assistance are. For a common goal, business, citizens, and the country have united into one essence that opposes war. Therefore, we at the European Business Association continue to share stories of how companies across different industries help the country. SoftServe

SoftServe has been supporting Ukraine’s economy since the first days of the war. In February, the company transferred a total of UAH 50 million in taxes in advance so that additional revenues to the state budget would strengthen the economy. SoftServe also allocated UAH 12 mil for assistance in various areas related to the war, and later another 22 million hryvnias from the company’s management. Separately, the company’s employees have collected 2 million hryvnias and continue to collect significant sums even now.

Hundreds of Softserve’s IT specialists work with NGOs and government agencies within the OpenTech project to develop digital products and solutions for them. Today, SoftServe volunteers have about 20 projects in progress.

Greennet

The company’s most valuable asset is the team, as Greennet is an international IT system integrator that helps build IT infrastructure, and data networks for our customers – both public and private companies, critical infrastructure, the financial sector, and ISPs.

Some of the company’s specialists are now defending the country with weapons, and Greennet provides them with all the necessary support and sincerely looks forward to their return unharmed to normal business life with victory!
