Production and exports of poultry products may decrease in Ukraine

27/ 08/ 2021
According to the EBA Animal Health Committee, a decrease in production and exports of poultry is likely to happen unless the state registration of coccidiostats is unblocked shortly in Ukraine. Currently, the use of coccidiostats in animal husbandry is restricted as it is not regulated by law due to the lack of established maximum levels of residues of these substances in food products of animal origin. The European Business Association addressed a letter to the Prime Minister of Ukraine with a request to solve this important problem for the poultry industry. This issue can be resolved by the adoption of the draft Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine On approval of amendments to food safety indicators – maximum limits (levels) of residues of veterinary drugs in food of animal origin, published on February 17 on the official website of the Ministry of Health. At the same time, EBA representatives of the Association had addressed the Cabinet of Ministers with a similar question first in March. Coccidiostats are therapeutic feed additives used to prevent diseases in poultry feeding. Without the use of these feed additives, the risk of falling (death) of poultry is more than 80%. They are mainly used in industrial poultry farming, where the health of the birds is critical because the deaths are very massive and abrupt. Imports of coccidiostats stopped in May while their production is currently impossible due to lack of registration, and the situation has only worsened since then. Further delays in the adoption of the draft Order and the unblockage of the procedure for state registration and re-registration of coccidiostats, according to EBA experts, could lead to a sharp decline in poultry stocks in Ukraine, which in turn will negatively affect the production and export of poultry products. Dmytro Kyryliuk. EBA Animal Health Committee Coordinator. The poultry farms are currently forced to look for a replacement technology. It should be noted that this process takes about six months, during which there is a significant risk of losing all livestock. Besides, it is impossible to completely replace coccidiostats in industrial poultry. At least, there are no such examples in Ukraine and the EU. Therefore, the EBA calls on the Prime Minister to foster the approval of the necessary changes as soon as possible, which will unblock the possibility of using coccidiostats and prevent a decline in poultry development in Ukraine.   Be the first to learn about the latest EBA news with our Telegram-channel – EBAUkraine.
