Smaller, More Frequent Shipments: Why Importers Are Turning to LCL

30/ 10/ 2026
Large purchases made once every six months are increasingly giving way to smaller, more frequent shipments. Businesses want to avoid tying up cash in excess inventory and paying for unnecessary warehouse space. Ordering smaller quantities helps companies respond to demand more quickly. But traditionally, shipping smaller loads presented a challenge: businesses either had to wait until they had enough cargo to fill a container or pay for space they didn’t need. LCL shipping removes that barrier. Cargo, even a single box, can be collected from a supplier, consolidated at a warehouse, and shipped alongside other companies’ goods. On major trade lanes, departures are available weekly, while global partner networks make it possible to arrange shipments from hundreds of ports worldwide. The scale of this trend can be seen in the figures reported by individual logistics providers. In 2025, for example, Consolline handled 3,000 LCL bookings and 25,000 m3 of imports from China. The result is a more flexible supply chain: goods can ship as soon as they’re ready, rather than sitting in storage until there’s enough cargo to fill a container.
