The Role of AI in Fundraising: How to Attract Funding More Effectively

20/ 06/ 2025
In today’s landscape, where competition for funding is intensifying and donors expect well-prepared, substantiated, and creative proposals, AI is gradually becoming not just an assistant, but a strategic tool. At the same time, challenges arise: how to use intelligent algorithms properly, maintain human oversight, ensure data security, and avoid the pitfalls of automation?  These and other aspects were discussed during the EBA Odesa event “The Role of AI in Fundraising,” which took place on June 18 and brought together business representatives actively working with grant instruments and seeking effective ways to attract funding. The meeting was moderated by Kateryna Morozova, Head of the South Ukrainian Office of the EBA. She emphasized that the use of AI today is not about replacing humans but about enhancing their capabilities. However, critical thinking, professionalism, and ethics remain key.  The invited speaker was Tetiana Honcharenko — an expert at Crowe Mikhailenko, entrepreneur, business group leader, and specialist in the creation of industrial parks, development of business and innovation ecosystems, and the launch of development and corporate innovation centers. She shared her experience of integrating artificial intelligence into project management, fundraising activities, and scaling business models.  Does AI always “understand” us correctly?  Modern language models open new opportunities for business, the public sector, and project teams. But the main question remains relevant: how exactly should questions be asked to receive truly useful answers? This topic was the focus of Tetiana’s key presentation, where she stressed that the quality of AI’s response directly depends on the quality of the prompt.  Clarity, context, and detail are the three pillars of effective interaction with language models. Through practical examples, participants saw that even a slight change in phrasing a prompt can completely change the result — from general advice to a specific, actionable solution.  Besides the basics of prompt engineering, the discussion covered:  How to properly formulate queries to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini to get truly relevant responses.  How to create your own AI assistant using platforms like Make, Zapier, n8n — for automating routine tasks, including application preparation.  How to effectively use content generation tools — textual (applications, presentations, cover letters) and visual (using Midjourney, DALL·E, Stable Diffusion).  Real Ukrainian cases demonstrating successful use of AI in fundraising and grant campaigns.  Overview of financial support programs: Ukraine Facility, UIF, grants, guarantees, loans, and blended financing.  At the same time, the expert emphasized that automation does not absolve responsibility. Every generated text requires human review — considering legal accuracy, ethical aspects, uniqueness, and compliance with donor requirements. AI is a powerful tool, but only when combined with professionalism and critical human thinking.  We sincerely thank all participants for their engagement, questions, and interest!  Special thanks to Tetiana Honcharenko for her professional, inspiring presentation and openness to sharing experience. Her practical advice, understanding of the topic, and examples from her own work became a true guide for those just beginning to use AI in fundraising efforts.  Such meetings prove that when business, experts, and technology unite, new ideas, partnerships, and solutions emerge. The South Ukrainian Office of the EBA will continue to create spaces for experience exchange, knowledge development, and support of innovative approaches.

Besides the basics of prompt engineering, the discussion covered:

  • How to properly formulate queries to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini to get truly relevant responses.
  • How to create your own AI assistant using platforms like Make, Zapier, n8n — for automating routine tasks, including application preparation.
  • How to effectively use content generation tools — textual (applications, presentations, cover letters) and visual (using Midjourney, DALL·E, Stable Diffusion).
  • Real Ukrainian cases demonstrating successful use of AI in fundraising and grant campaigns.
  • Overview of financial support programs: Ukraine Facility, UIF, grants, guarantees, loans, and blended financing.
