The future of education and science. Warconomic Talks with Ella Libanova

14/ 09/ 2022
The full-scale war is a huge upheaval for Ukrainian society, which triggered social, demographic, and value changes in Ukrainians. On September 14, we talked about the scope and consequences of the impact of such inevitable changes, as well as about Ukrainian education and science, during the meeting of the European Business Association with professor Ella Libanova.  Mrs. Libanova shared with the participants of the meeting her thoughts on the current situation with migration from Ukraine. Thus, in her opinion, the announced figures regarding the number of Ukrainians who were forced to leave abroad may be somewhat overestimated and may actually amount to about 1.5 million people. Of them, there are about half a million schoolchildren, whom Ms. Libanova advises to combine offline education abroad and online in Ukraine in order to have the opportunity to socialize, but also to maintain a connection with their homeland. Quality education is an important prerequisite for the development of national science. According to the professor, support for Ukrainian science is extremely important, including from the side of the business. It takes about 15-20 years to educate a qualified scientist, so it is easier to preserve the existing scientific potential than to start anew. Mrs. Libanova believes that Ukraine can become a world-famous hub not only thanks to the IT industry but also thanks to the prospect of development of construction, medicine, defense industry, deepening of processing in the agricultural sector, energy, etc. In addition, Ukraine can set high standards in service industries. However, an important condition for post-war development is the return of temporary emigrants to Ukraine. There is a risk of non-return of people who will stay abroad for more than a year and build new connections there, and at the same time, with the departure of children, Ukraine loses part of its future potential. Therefore, the task of business and the state is to offer people such conditions that will ensure their return and the corresponding quality of life and work at home, in Ukraine. We are all currently living in a period of deep transformation, and we need fresh ideas to become stronger, more flexible, and more adaptable. And here it is worth turning to domestic science, which, according to Ms. Libanova, has untapped potential. The association will collect ideas and needs from businesses regarding cooperation with scientists and can become a platform for implementing joint projects and initiatives.
