Kovalska will build the Cottage for the treatment of cancer-stricken children

24/ 09/ 2018
Children diagnosed with cancer appreciate life like no other. Being incredibly brave, strong and motivating, they make you see the world from a different perspective, do good deeds and selfless acts. KOVALSKA starts the construction of a home for children receiving treatment for cancer and recovering from disease, from all over Ukraine, completely free of charge. In this new house children will be close to their families, have delicious meals, play fun games and enjoy the flowers on the backyard instead of seeing white coats around, feeling the smell of medicines and conforming to the strict hospital rules. Every year 350 families will be able to live and recover in an atmosphere of care and love. Construction of the Cottage will start this fall. And it became the reason for Kovalskas CEO Serhiy Pylypenko and President of Zaporuka foundation to sign a Memorandum on cooperation. Nine years ago, Zaporuka foundation started the project Smile to help the families of young patients.  However, that name did not stick, because the Center is the place where families rest from medical procedures... just like a weekend cottage. Parents often say that in hospital children receive treatment, whereas in the Cottage they can just live. So now the Center is officially known by the name given to it by its main visitors. For 9 years the Cottage has become a home to 1037 Ukrainian families, but over the years Zaporuka foundation had to relocate three times. The new project is going to double the number of families living in the Cottage at once – up to 15. It will significantly expand the capabilities of the unique center. Architects considered creating the image of a house that would amaze and inspire children and their families to have positive emotions and thoughts to be one of the most important tasks. Wavy forms on the facade seemingly flowing into each other create the effect of a cozy country house, though with a modern twist. Around the house there will be a shed for a company car, a small parking area for Cottages visitors as well as a cosy courtyard for having pleasant time outdoors. Ground floor has psychologists and physiotherapists offices with equipment needed for treatment. Panoramic dining room filled with light from the circle of many large windows, is an interesting spatial solution. Next to dining room will be a large hall for games, movie screenings or volunteer activities. The inner space of the Cottage is rational and well thought out. Rooms are adapted for people with disabilities or temporarily unable to move. Architects paid a lot of attention to engineering systems during design development. It was extremely important to create a ventilation system which would make flowing air from one room to another impossible. And in the cold season children will always be warm while playing or bathing thanks to the under floor heating in halls and bathrooms. Second floor can be accessed in a few ways – by internal stairs and a lift. In design development, close attention was paid to use of eco-friendly, safe and quality materials to ensure comfort and sanitary and hygienic requirements. It was one of the reasons to choose Kovalska a general contractor for the project.
