The EBA and the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection discussed the impact of the ban on livestock product imports from Germany

28/ 01/ 2025
On 27 January, representatives of food companies from the European Business Association met with Serhii Tkachuk, Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection (SSUFSCP), and experts from the Service to discuss the impact of restrictions introduced in response to a registered case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Germany on the operations of food product importers. The last case of FMD in Ukraine was recorded in 1988, and since 1992, Ukraine has held WOAH status as a country free from FMD vaccination, which is confirmed annually. As a reminder, due to the outbreak, on 13 January, the SSUFSCP issued an order banning the import of the following from Germany: Animals susceptible to FMD; Genetic material for animal breeding; Raw materials and products of animal origin. The current bans are implemented in accordance with Ukrainian legislation and the recommendations of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). The SSUFSCP is now preparing a meeting with German representatives to discuss the situation regarding the import of the aforementioned products and potential solutions. The SSUFSCP has stated that once the outbreak in Germany is resolved and confirmed by a corresponding notification from WOAH, the restrictions in Ukraine will be reviewed. If no such confirmation is received from WOAH, Ukraine will make a decision based on the solutions developed jointly with the competent authority in Germany. Currently, the import of animal products from Germany is only permitted if the requirements of Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 537 are met and information about the type of treatment, in line with WOAHs Terrestrial Animal Health Code, is provided. Until the restrictions on livestock product imports are lifted, the SSUFSCP is ready to provide consultations regarding product types, treatments, and the list of documents required for importation into Ukraine. EBA member companies are invited to submit relevant information for further coordination with SSUFSCP experts.
