EBA experts highlight key challenges in the woodworking industry

14/ 03/ 2025
The European Business Association took part in discussions on pressing issues in the forestry and woodworking industries at the Forest Resources: Current Challenges and Prospects forum. The event aimed to unite representatives of government agencies, foresters, and the woodworking business to develop joint steps for improving the regulation of the forestry and woodworking sectors. Participants discussed the current state, challenges, and prospects of the industry, focusing on forestry resources, timber exchange trading, and FSC certification standards. Businesses raised concerns over the sharp increase in timber prices across almost all categories in the first and second quarters of 2025, while also discussing potential price levels for the third and fourth quarters of the year. EBA experts once again highlighted the issue of insufficient timber harvesting, which has led to a supply shortage and consequently driven up prices. They stressed that an adequate level of timber harvesting would stabilise the market and prevent sudden price surges. Therefore, businesses called for practical measures to increase logging volumes and ensure the sustainable operation of the woodworking industry. The ЕВА also noted that due to existing sanctions against Russia and Belarus, Ukraine has a unique opportunity to expand its presence in the global timber products market. However, businesses believe that these sanctions are not fully effective, as there are ways to bypass them, which some market players continue to exploit. Ukraines presence in the global market cannot be strengthened without increasing timber harvesting volumes and setting competitive pricing, which would allow Ukrainian woodworking companies to regain their competitiveness.
