EBA experts discuss practical aspects of implementing the EU deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

12/ 08/ 2025
Representatives of the European Business Association took part in a Round Table organised by the Federation of Employers of Ukraine and the Working Group on State Policy in the Timber, Furniture Industry and Timber Market under the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Development, entitled “EUDR: Collection of Geo-coordinates of Harvesting Sites and Official Approval of the Mechanism for Transferring Coordinates.” During the event, which brought together both business representatives and government agencies, participants discussed the specifics of implementing the requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), in particular: Regulatory framework for collecting geo-coordinates of timber harvesting sites and their transfer; Practical challenges faced by businesses in preparing to meet the EUDR requirements. According to the EUDR, from 1 January 2026, European importers of timber and timber products will be obliged to carry out due diligence on the origin of products before each import. EBA experts note that this will directly affect Ukrainian timber exporters, who will be required to provide the relevant documentation. For this reason, businesses stress the need to finalise and promptly publish for public consultation the draft Law of Ukraine “On Trade in Products that May Lead to Deforestation and Forest Degradation” to allow for proper review and consideration of the business community’s position. Given the export-oriented nature of the domestic timber sector, EBA experts emphasise the importance of building swift and effective solutions to ensure a proper export–import regime and safeguard economic stability.
