EBA appeal to global pharmaceutical and medical devices manufacturers, sponsors, contract research organizations to stop investing into Russia

04/ 03/ 2022
On behalf of the member companies of the Health Care Committee of the European Business Association including Clinical Trials Subcommittee and Medical Devices Subcommittee, we address you regarding the war started by Russia on the early morning of February 24, 2022, against an independent country – Ukraine. Russia launched air and missile strikes attacking all regions of Ukraine, including civilian facilities. Russian troops, sabotage groups, numerous tank battalions and heavy military equipment are invading Ukraine from several directions destroying the cities and villages of our country, killing Ukrainian citizens, including civilians, children, women, and elderly people. Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine has been going on evidently for nine days already. All Ukrainian people, relatives and friends are now hiding in shelters and subway stations to stay alive. Our largest cities are under constant siege, bombardment and missile strikes. Our people leave their homes, patients cannot receive necessary treatment. Russian aggression and terrorist actions against Ukraine have led to mass killings of Ukrainian citizens and left many families homeless. With each passing day of the war against our independent country, Russia loses its human face. Numerous cases of violation of the laws of war and international humanitarian law by the Russian aggressor have been recorded along the entire offensive line. The most common war crimes of the Russian occupants: the use of weapons against civilians, bombing, rocket and artillery shelling of ambulances, orphanages, kindergartens, schools, hospitals, residential areas, which led to the destruction of civilian infrastructure. The enemy tries to hide behind the state symbols and uniforms of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, and the National Police of Ukraine. To this end, they hang Ukrainian flags on Russian military equipment. Columns of the aggressor’s tanks and armored personnel carriers ordered fire on residents’ homes in the Chernihiv region, deliberately destroyed infrastructure facilities and housing in Kyiv and other regions. In addition, there were cases where the enemy hung a white flag on its vehicle, allegedly to surrender. However, after approaching the Ukrainian positions, the occupants shot in order to kill. Invaders brought the humanitarian catastrophe in Volnovakha. The Russian occupants received hatred and contempt of the civilian population. We appeal to all global pharmaceutical and medical devices manufacturers, sponsors and contract research organizations to join international industrial sanctions and stop investing into new technology and pharmaceutical R&D in Russia. We appeal to you to stop clinical trials of your innovative drugs in Russia.
