Business supports steps aimed at combating the shadow sector, but it is important to follow through

15/ 05/ 2024
This week, representatives of the Economic Security Bureau launched a series of searches at the 5 largest domestic tobacco producers with confirmed information about their illegal activities. According to the agency, counterfeit excise stamps and unlabeled tobacco products were found in some places. Searches and procedural actions are ongoing. The European Business Association has long emphasized that transparent businesses are in unequal operating conditions compared to shadow businesses. At the same time, not only transparent businesses, but also the economy and the state lose money due to the shadow economy. This is a phenomenon that needs to be eradicated and cannot be tolerated. Therefore, business supports actions aimed at combating the illegal sector, and we hope that the course of fighting the shadow economy will continue. And we as a country will be able to see tangible results of this fight and the cases initiated, in particular this week, will not be put on hold, but will be brought to an end and the offenders will be brought to justice. In this process, we are grateful to the Temporary Investigation Commission on Economic Crimes in the Parliament and, in particular, to Danylo Hetmantsev, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Taxation and Customs Policy, for his leadership in this Commission.
