Business is willing to join the social initiatives of the First Lady of Ukraine

03/ 06/ 2021
The status of the First Lady provides an opportunity to draw attention to important social problems which can be tackled only with the joint efforts of the state, business, and the public. On June 2, the European Business Association met with the First Lady of Ukraine -  Mrs. Olena Zelenska. Thus, during the meeting,  Mrs. Zelenska presented a number of socio-cultural projects to the community. Thus, we talk about cultural diplomacy, the Barrier-free society, the Biarritz Partnership for gender equality, school nutrition reform, and other issues. It should be noted that business representatives, including many EBA member companies, are already actively involved in the initiatives of the First Lady. Besides, as part of the project, ten large Ukrainian companies formed the first Ukrainian community Business without Barriers, which is united around the ideas of inclusion and diversity and is open to other companies that have similar values and are ready to share their barrier-free development practices. The presidents wife refers to the Barrier-free society as a new philosophy. According to her, everyone, regardless of age, physical and mental capabilities, should have access to all kinds of social resources: information, education, and the possibility of free passage. Besides, Olena Zelenska shared the results of the cultural diplomacy project focused on the introduction of Ukrainian-language audio guides in the worlds largest museums. This year, 17 new audio guides in Ukrainian have appeared as a part of the initiative. The first project was implemented at the Albertina Gallery in Vienna last year. The First Lady also emphasized reforming the school nutrition system. Thus, several stages of reform have already been implemented. The first stage included the full update of state norms on hygiene and standards of feeding organization at schools, as well as the renovation of food units. In 2020, the Ministry of Education allocated a subvention of UAH 400 million for the modernization of 2,000 school canteens. At the same time, there are about 15,000 schools in Ukraine. The next step is to implement the reform in regions. The First Lady invited local businesses and the authorities to join efforts to modernize the food units in a number of educational institutions. According to Mrs. Zelenska, only 5% of school canteens in Ukraine do not require investment in modernization. In general, the reform is primarily aimed at ensuring that schools have all the necessary conditions of safety and hygiene for the healthy nutrition of children. After all, children are the future of the country. Business representatives were also interested in the initiatives that will be implemented within the framework of the Biarritz Partnership for Gender Equality. Thus, within this partnership, Ukraine has identified 5 priority areas, among which, reducing the pay gap between female and male employees. On behalf of the European Business Association, we truly thank Olena Zelenska for her sincerity, empathy, and openness in dialogue with business. The initiatives presented by the First Lady are important and useful not only for business but also for the whole society. Therefore, for its part, the business community is ready to support tangible social changes in the country, as well as to offer ideas for building a sustainable progressive environment for living, studying, and working in Ukraine.    Be the first to learn about the latest EBA news with our Telegram-channel – EBAUkraine.
