Businesses take action to sort and recycle waste

15/ 11/ 2024
On November 15, Ukraine joins the global celebration of World Recycling Day, highlighting the importance of waste sorting and secondary raw material processing. In anticipation of this day, representatives of the European Business Association visited the sorting and recycling facilities of Obukhivmisktorresursy. This enterprise handles waste from McDonald’s, and several other companies, and separately collects municipal waste from the local community. Today, we would like to emphasize that sorting waste is a simple yet crucial step that everyone can take to protect the environment and support sustainable development in our country. Sorting and recycling waste not only reduces pollution and the volume of landfills but also helps conserve natural resources through reuse, saves energy (since recycling often consumes less energy than extracting and producing new materials), and raises environmental awareness among citizens. This awareness is essential for sustainable development and the adoption of a circular economy. For example, McDonald’s, together with its restaurant customers, sorts and sends more than 200 tons of waste for recycling every month. This includes paper, plastic items, coffee grounds, organic waste, used oil, and even fats. During the visit, EBA representatives witnessed how paper waste is transformed into cardboard boxes, while coffee grounds are added to fuel pellets to enhance their combustion quality and heat output. At the same time, we would like to draw attention to the urgent need for Ukraine to address the issue of waste management comprehensively, including packaging waste. This requires adopting one of the three draft laws on packaging and packaging waste that have been registered in the Verkhovna Rada since last year. Importantly, when reviewing and finalizing these draft laws, it is critical to involve business representatives in the process, as they bring practical expertise on how waste sorting and recycling processes operate in European Union countries.
