Energy Efficiency of a Heat Recovery System: How the System Helps You Save on Air Conditioning

  As the weather warms up and air temperatures rise, the load on air conditioning systems increases dramatically, which can have a significant impact on energy bills. It is during this period that we particularly face a lack of fresh air (stuffy conditions) and a feeling of discomfort, so we strive to create the most comfortable conditions possible for staying indoors. In extreme heat, we usually turn on the air conditioner as soon as we enter a room. However, it is important to understand that it does not provide a supply of fresh air. The main function of an air conditioner is to maintain a comfortable temperature for the air that is already in the room. Accordingly, if the air is not being refreshed, the cooling system simply circulates “stale” air throughout the room. And if you open a window, you’ll very quickly lose the pleasant coolness created by the air conditioner. As a result, the system will have to expend resources again to cool the room, which means additional—and essentially wasted—kilowatts of electricity. The best solution in this case is to combine an air conditioner with a heat recovery ventilator. These two devices are not interchangeable, but they work perfectly together: the air conditioner cools the air, while the heat recovery ventilator ensures a constant supply of fresh air without significant energy loss.
