Meeting of the EBA Southern Ukrainian Office with the Odessa Regional Employment Center

    The labour market of Ukraine has undergone significant transformations in recent years, largely due to the full-scale Russian aggression. The war has caused considerable destruction, loss of jobs, population migration, and other challenges. Therefore, on March 27, 2024, members of the EBA Southern Ukrainian Office met with the management of the Odessa Regional and City Employment Centers to address current issues of the labour market development in the region. The event took place at the State Educational Institution Odessa Center of Vocational Education of the State Employment Service. During the discussion several important topics were touched upon: Financial support for employers. Representatives of the Employment Service presented opportunities and conditions for enterprises’ financial support to stimulate their activity and development. Current trends in the labour market of the Southern region. Participants discussed current trends and prospects for the labour market development in the region, as well as existing challenges and ways to address urgent issues. Labor migration issues in the region. Significant attention was given to the strategy of attracting and retaining talented personnel in the region, as well as the problems and opportunities of labour migration. Increasing the level of education and retraining of workers. Practical aspects of retraining programs and improving the qualifications of workers for the needs of the labour market were considered, noting their accessibility and effectiveness. The impact of state programs on employment and enterprise development. Participants discussed the effectiveness of state programs and their impact on employment, as well as proposed ways to optimize these programs for greater business support. In summary, it is worth noting that the labour market of Ukraine faces numerous challenges caused by the war. However, thanks to state programs, business adaptability and civil society initiatives, there are grounds for expecting gradual recovery and development. Our meeting was an important step in the joint efforts of the parties to increase the effectiveness of cooperation between businesses and employment service, as well as in addressing current issues in the development of the labour market in the Southern region. We thank the Odessa Regional and City Employment Centers for their involvement and openness to dialogue, and to the State Educational Institution Odessa Center of Vocational Education of the State Employment Service for the hospitality and interesting excursion!
