Strengthening urban resilience and fostering an integrated approach to recovery and urban regeneration through culture in Odesa

09/ 02/ 2024
Today, on February 9, 2024, an important event dedicated to the reconstruction of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in Odesa and the restoration of the cultural heritage of the region took place. The meeting, organized by the Embassy of Italy in Ukraine, was attended by the Mayor of Odesa, the leadership of the Odesa Regional State Administration, a delegation from UNESCO, and the head of the EBA Southern Ukrainian Office. We discussed crucial and relevant issues, such as strengthening collaboration between the business community, local government, and the Italian Republic to develop a working strategy for the recovery and development of the region after hostile attacks from the russian federation.  During the discussions, participants exchanged experiences and initiatives aimed at supporting economic growth, social development, and strengthening the infrastructure of Odesa. In particular, the project to enhance urban resilience and promote an integrated approach to recovery and revitalization through culture in Odesa was discussed.  Professor Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, Head of UNESCO Desk in Ukraine, presented a project in the field of cultural heritage preservation and tourism development, which could be a key factor in the regions economic recovery. The Italian side also expressed readiness to provide technical support and consultations for the implementation of related projects in these areas.  Overall, the plan is to rebuild architectural landmarks to a better state than they were before the attacks. As of today, €500,000 has already been allocated for the reconstruction of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral.  Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov of Odesa and the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Italy to Ukraine, Davide La Cecilia, expressed gratitude to all participants for their interest in the regions recovery and called for further fruitful cooperation. The event concluded with an understanding of the need to unite efforts and resources to achieve a common goal - creating a better and stable future for the residents of Odesa.
