Responsible Business: How METRO Ukraine Supports Humanitarian Missions and Sustainable Development

  In the two years since the full-scale invasion, METRO Ukraine has donated 58 million UAH in charitable aid, recycled 355,000 plastic bottles, and helped equip over 20 school shelters. The main areas of focus for the company in 2022-2023 were: humanitarian mission, employee and family support, and sustainable development. Humanitarian Mission Over the past two years, the company has provided more than 58 million UAH in charitable aid, including 891.3 tons of food, 131.2 tons of personal hygiene products, and 81.5 tons of non-food items. Most of these were donated to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Territorial Defense units. The company continues to implement large social programs aimed at supporting: Veterans: METRO Ukraine launched a multi-stage reintegration program for veterans. To prepare the organization, they introduced the Unbiased platform, based on a large cycle of interviews with colleagues on various topics related to biases, including gender, age, and wartime experiences. The first part of the Veteran Support Program includes meetings with military psychologists, defenders, and volunteers. The second part focuses on mental, physical, and financial well-being, as well as legal support on various issues for veterans. Medical facilities: The company equipped 22 shelters in regional tuberculosis hospitals. People with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities: METRO Ukraine supported the launch of the social café Sunshine Café. Students: METRO Ukraine equipped over 20 school shelters across six regions of Ukraine as part of the Safe School project. Children and communities affected by the war: For Childrens Day, the company distributed sweets to over 7,000 children in partnership with the Foodbank foundation. For St. Nicholas Day, the companys team launched the charity campaign METRO Mykolai and fulfilled the wishes of children of Ukrainian heroes, delivering over 10 tons of sweets, fruits, and toys. Support for Employees and Their Families From the first days of the full-scale invasion, METRO Ukraine ensured the safety of its staff by continuing salary payments to all employees, helping with evacuations from hot spots, and financing housing rentals. Thanks to the companys support, more than 600 employees could relocate their families to safe locations. In addition to financial aid, the company offered comprehensive support to its employees. METRO Ukraine created the Side by Side program, which combined educational aspects, where experts taught about processes, emotions, and states of being, with real support from psychologists and colleagues. Later, the METROMinds space was founded to unite colleagues through shared interests and to care for their well-being. This space has been promoted and developed through communities in areas such as physical and mental health, social and financial well-being, travel in Ukraine, and exploration of its history and national identity. The project has been running for two seasons and has attracted over 490 participants. Sustainable Development METRO Ukraine is actively working to reduce its environmental footprint. The company is expanding its range of eco-friendly products, with 70% of its disposable items being biodegradable. The company has introduced energy efficiency, waste sorting, and recycling programs at its centres. Waste Collection Points help reduce nearly 2 tons of solid household waste. Additionally, through the Yapomogabox machine, the company had collected and recycled over 355,000 plastic bottles.
