In Ukraine, up to 30% of gas can be replaced with hydrogen

18/ 03/ 2021
17 March, 2021, Kyiv. Residents of the two villages will start using the hydrogen-gas mixture in a year. These are two small villages with 50 to 100 households each.  At the beginning of the experiment, consumers will initially be supplied the natural gas mixture with 10% hydrogen content. Eventually, the share of green hydrogen will be increased up to 20%. The experiment using the natural gas and hydrogen mixture will last for two years. It is expected that experiment will start and last until 2025. Thus, experiments will be conducted to determine how the natural gas and hydrogen mixture will behave in real world conditions at the regular households. Preliminary results confirm that the maximum allowable hydrogen content in terms of safety may reach 30%. It is expected that the experiment will not require changing meters and gas equipment in consumer houses. However, as the concentration of hydrogen in the natural gas goes up, it may be necessary to change the burners in some gas appliances. Dynamic experiments are now underway, when the natural gas and hydrogen mixture is tested in different proportions on household gas appliances and gas meters, though at test sites without end users and in closed networks.  They will last until mid-2022 to anticipate all possible risks.  “We are creating a project similar to HyDeploy in the UK, which involves about 10,000 consumers. This project, although working in test mode, has already gone beyond the experiment. This is already part of the gas distribution network with hydrogen,” says Stanislav Kazda, Director, Strategic Planning Department, RGC. In 2020, Regional Gas Company launched a series of experiments to study how the natural gas and hydrogen mixtures behave at different concentrations in Ukrainian gas pipelines. Ukraine declares its intentions to join the Green Deal, and is preparing to commit to reducing carbon emissions by 2050.
