EBA discusses compensation for damages with Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine

03/ 02/ 2023
The war has caused large-scale destruction and economic losses not only to Ukraine as a country but also to its citizens and businesses whose property and assets were destroyed or damaged. Therefore, the issue of future compensation for damage and destruction of property of businesses and citizens as a result of hostilities is highly acute. Moreover, fair compensation to all victims and restoration of business solvency is one of the prerequisites for the recovery of our country and its reconstruction. Therefore, the EBA Ukraine Recovery Committee initiated a meeting with Valeria Kolomiets, Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine for European Integration, which took place on February 3. During the meeting, Ms. Kolomiets told the business that Ukraine is currently actively negotiating with many international partners to sign a multilateral international agreement that will create a framework for ensuring compensation for the damage caused by russian military aggression. Such an agreement will provide for the establishment of a compensation commission that will consider claims for compensation from all affected parties, as well as the creation of a compensation fund from which compensation will be paid directly. The Deputy Minister also said that work is currently underway to launch a register of losses, where all interested parties will be able to submit information about their losses. According to Ms. Kolomiets, such a register could be launched in the coming months. Therefore, on behalf of the business community, we are sincerely grateful to the Deputy Minister for the extremely substantive dialogue and look forward to further constructive cooperation for the effective reconstruction of the country.
