The First Lady, Heavyweight Champion, And One Thousand Of Ukrainians Rocked Web Summit 2022

  70 startups, dozens of VC funds, IT service and product companies, government institutions, and local ecosystem organizations gathered together in Lisbon to present the Ukrainian tech industry to the world   Ukraine, the capital of Freedom and one of the biggest European tech powerhouses, amazed thousands of people from 160 countries at this year’s Web Summit in Portugal. Ukrainians united their efforts in order to present the tech ecosystem of a fighting country at the biggest European tech conference. At least 30,000 people visited the national stand of Ukraine. Among the visitors were such distinguished and honorable guests as the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska, the Mayor of Lisbon Carlos Moedas, the US Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Marisa Lago, and undisputed and undefeated world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. The Ukrainian pavilion was jam-packed during all 3 days of the Summit. Thousands of people have found new connections and partners. Let’s dive deeper and see how it went. A symbol and a reminder of the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people The Ukrainian national stand, which was one of the largest at the summit, consisted of several zones in which all the main activities were held in a non-stop style. The Ukrainian Startup Fund together with GIST organized the largest delegation of Ukrainian startups in history, which included 24 teams. They all formed the Ukrainian startup alley close to the main stand while the total number of Ukrainian startups and companies at this year’s Web Summit reached 70. The startups had an excellent opportunity to pitch their products and ideas in front of hundreds of people. Several press conferences and masterclasses were held by government officials where Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov, and Alex Bornyakov, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Digital Transformation were among the key speakers. The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and the Embassy of Ukraine in Portugal were also among the partners of the national stand. UNIT.City innovation park, a general partner, presented an overview of the Ukrainian tech ecosystem and innovative solutions that can conquer the tech world. Sigma Software Labs, a venture part of Sigma Software Group, organized interactive games and quizzes. Bitcoin Magazine Ukraine, Flyer One Ventures SID Venture Partners, Ukrainian Hub, NEAR UA, Roosh, and other companies had numerous investment meetings and presentations. Ukrainian night in Lisbon’s city center gathered 500 people that spent an unforgettable evening in the company of startup founders, investors, and tech enthusiasts. The visitors had a great opportunity to help Ukraine by getting some unique items and NFTs at a quiet charity auction for the United24 fundraising initiative. The final chapter of this journey was held at the masterclass where 11 speakers from various Ukrainian companies and organizations spoke. One hundred people gathered to hear and see how Ukrainians are facing the challenges of wartime and how they can inspire the world with technologies and innovation. Moving forward no matter what Despite the unprovoked and brutal russian aggression, the Ukrainian IT sector has shown incredible resilience and determination even in the country’s darkest hours. To this day it remains the only industry in Ukraine that still shows growth during the war. According to the National Bank of Ukraine, the export volume of computer services for the first half of 2022 has reached $3.74 billion, which is 23% more than for the same period in 2021. Ukrainian start-ups and tech companies raised almost $350 million in the first six months of 2022. The country’s tech talent pool has nearly 300,000 developers. Many tech giants such as Amazon, Apple, and SpaceX have shown their support to Ukraine. Microsoft’s Brad Smith announced the extension of aid for Ukraine’s tech wartime tech innovation by up to $100 million in Microsoft services. The organizers of the Ukrainian national stand are also negotiating potential partnerships with representatives of the biggest startup communities in Europe and the US.
