Self-Defense and Safety with EBA Odesa “Basic Firearms Handling Skills. Legal Aspects of Gun Ownership in Ukraine”

23/ 05/ 2025
Issues of self-defense and preparedness are extremely relevant today, and the European Business Association consistently addresses security topics — both at the company level and for their employees. That’s why on May 21, 2025, EBA Odesa hosted a new event format dedicated to personal safety and self-defense. The meeting took place at the STVOL shooting range in Odesa and brought together business representatives to discuss responsible firearm ownership amid modern threats.  The event was opened by Kateryna Morozova, Head of the EBA Southern Ukraine Office. “We understand that modern business faces many risks — from cyber threats to emergencies and employee personal safety. Therefore, our goal is to help businesses not only adapt but also be ready to act,” Kateryna emphasized.  The first part of the event was a tour of STVOL — the largest indoor shooting range in Eastern Europe. Participants explored spacious shooting galleries designed for various distances, equipped with modern targets of different types. Special attention was drawn to the unique running boar installation — a dynamic target simulating moving objects, used for training hunters and athletes alike. Such a vivid and engaging start immediately set the right tone for the upcoming discussion.  During the event, participants reviewed key legal and technical aspects of firearm ownership and use in Ukraine, including:  Legislative requirements: An overview of the main laws and regulations governing firearms circulation in Ukraine, including permit acquisition and weapon registration procedures.  Rights and responsibilities of firearm owners: Rules for safe storage, transportation, and usage of weapons.  Liability for violations: Administrative and criminal liability for illegal possession or misuse of firearms.  Technical characteristics and safety rules: Understanding various types of weapons, their operation features, and fundamental safety rules critical for preserving life and health.  The event’s highlight was a practical shooting session, where participants had the opportunity to try three types of firearms under the supervision of professional instructors. This allowed them not only to reinforce their knowledge but also to build confidence in their actions during critical situations.  We sincerely thank all participants for their interest and active involvement! Special thanks go to Valerii Shnurenko, Head of the Corporate Security Working Group of the European Business Association, and Andrii Skoryi, Director of the STVOL shooting range — their support made this event possible. We also extend our gratitude to the STVOL team — Anna Hladkykh, Deputy Director for Sports, and Dmytro Sandulenko, Senior Instructor — for their professional guidance and comprehensive support.  Looking forward to new meetings within the EBA Odesa security format!
