RETN’s Response to the Cyberattack on Ukraine’s National Railway

25/ 03/ 2025
On March 24, 2025, Ukraines state-owned railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, reported a large-scale cyberattack targeting its online services. The recent cyberattack on Ukraine’s national railway, Ukrzaliznytsia, is a stark reminder of how critical infrastructure remains a prime target in modern cyber warfare. This large-scale attack disrupted online services, but thanks to swift mitigation efforts, train operations currently remain unaffected. However, the implications are clear - DDoS attacks are becoming more frequent, more complex, and more devastating.” “Cyber resilience is no longer optional - it’s a necessity. The railway attack is just one example of how these threats can paralyse essential services. For businesses where uninterrupted internet and network services are mission-critical - whether in finance, healthcare, or transportation - their digital infrastructure must be defended with the same urgency as their physical assets. Defending against these threats requires proactive investment, rapid response systems, and cross-industry collaboration. In this volatile digital landscape, the choice is simple: adapt or be left vulnerable. said, Olena Lutsenko, MD of RETN Ukraine and Business Development Director. “At RETN, we’ve seen firsthand how threat actors leverage volumetric attacks to overwhelm networks, and our response has been to scale our mitigation capabilities accordingly. We’ve increased our scrubbing capacity by 5000% and in February 2025 established a dedicated scrubbing centre in Kyiv, ensuring that malicious traffic is neutralised locally before it can cause widespread disruption.” * * * About RETN RETN provides extensive network connectivity across Ukraine and handles 15% of the regions international internet traffic.
