Safety rules in the oil and gas industry need to be updated

16/ 08/ 2022
More than 2 years ago, the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture (now the Ministry of Economy) unveiled an Order regarding safety rules in the oil and gas industry. The document was available on the website of the State Labour Service of Ukraine for public discussion. The European Business Association supports the adoption of this document and has already addressed the state authorities with proposals and calls for its adoption. After all, according to business, the current safety regulations in the oil and gas sector today do not comply with modern trends in gas production and require revision. So, for example, the current rules do not allow the use of new approaches to drilling wells (bush drilling, air drilling), etc. Moreover, during the analysis of the old document, the experts came to the conclusion that about 50% of the rules and approaches need to be changed. That is why, in fact, the draft of the new rules was developed. The new draft of the Order proposes to establish organizational and technical safety requirements during the design, drilling, construction, operation, overhaul, and research of oil, gas, and other wells related to oil and gas extraction, industrial and inter-industrial oil and gas collection systems, preparation for transporting oil and gas through main pipelines and for technological equipment of objects of the oil and gas production industry. Since 2 years have already passed and the document has not been adopted, the EBA appeals to the State Labor Service and the Ministry of Economy to adopt the relevant order. After all, security issues are currently a priority for business, the population, and the country in general, so in the end, this issue should be resolved in the oil and gas industry as well, since the waiting period is already too long. In turn, this will help create safer working conditions, increase the general level of industrial safety, and optimize mining processes. We hope that the voice of business will be heard!
