Optical network of Ukrtelecom has expanded to 80,000 kilometres

13/ 06/ 2024
The total length of the Ukrtelecom optical network is twice the circumference of the Earth In recent years, Ukrtelecom has been actively developing its optical infrastructure through investing in the development of an FTTH/P network based on the GPON technology. This architecture and technology are best suited to ensure stable and high-quality provision of telecommunication services, including energy-independent Internet. We built almost 11,000 kilometres of optical lines in 2022-2023, that is, during the full-scale war. Over that period, the company connected hundreds of healthcare and educational institutions to optical lines and enabled hundreds of thousands of households in all regions of the country to start using modern services. The expansion of Ukrtelecom’s optical infrastructure involves the installation of modern telecommunications equipment, the laying of new fibre optic communication lines, and the replacement of old copper networks with optical ones, including during network restoration in the de-occupied territories.  Ukrtelecom’s optical network has expanded to over 80,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables, which is twice the circumference of our planet (the length of the Earth’s equator is 40,075,696 metres). And it will grow even more soon. “In 2023, Ukrtelecom invested about UAH 500 million in the development and modernisation of the network and our IT infrastructure. This year, we plan to increase the volume of investments by 70%, or to more than UAH 800 million. And due to this, more than 8,000 kilometres of optical communication lines will be laid,” says CEO of JSC “Ukrtelecom” Yurii Kurmaz when discussing the company’s plans. This means that even more urban and rural residents of Ukraine will have access to modern and reliable telecommunications services. Currently, Ukrtelecom’s fibre optic network provides access to the Internet at a speed of up to 1 Gbit/s, which allows its subscribers to use the full potential of digital services in the public and private sectors and discover services based on IR technologies, in particular, interactive television in HD and 4K quality, video conferencing and Internet telephony. Ukrtelecom focuses on the modernisation and expansion of the optical infrastructure to serve the needs of households and businesses while providing reliable communication services to government bodies and its special users – the Security and Defence Forces of Ukraine. For reference: Joint-stock company “Ukrtelecom” is one of the largest telecommunications companies in Ukraine, which offers its customers in all regions of the country practically every type of modern telecommunications services under a single account. Ukrtelecom is a provider of high-speed fixed Internet with the widest coverage. The operator implements large-scale network development and modernisation projects which involve replacing copper cables with optical cables and expanding the geographical coverage of its services, as it lays thousands of kilometres of optical lines every year. Ukrtelecom is the sole participant and founder of TryMob LLC, which is a provider of mobile communication services in the UMTS/WCDMA standard under the TryMob trademark. Since 2013, Ukrtelecom has been part of the SCM business group.
