Today energy efficiency is becoming not just a fashion trend, but a vital factor. From 2019, European legislation prohibits the construction of houses with energy consumption above 15 kilowatts / hour per square meter per year (passive house standard). Today we will understand how the installation of external sun protection systems affects the energy efficiency of buildings.
Energy efficiency means rational or useful use of energy resources. In other words – how to spend less energy but get the same desired result. This concept should not be equated with energy saving. They are connected, but still different: energy saving is only economy of energy or abandoning it altogether, while energy efficiency improvement is multifaceted technological progress, modernization, where energy saving is only one of the consequences.

Since 1974, in connection with the aggravation of the global energy crisis, the countries of Western Europe, the United States and Japan have begun to pursue a policy of improving energy efficiency by developing and implementing appropriate programs.
The use of external sun protection systems directly affects the energy efficiency of the building.
Today, almost every household product from a light bulb to a refrigerator and a car is assigned an energy efficiency class. Houses are also becoming energy efficient. The first of them was built in 1972 in Massachusetts, USA. This is a high-rise building with a total area of 16,350 square meters. m with a two-story garage, designed by architects Andrew and Nicholas Isaac, who achieved a reduction in energy consumption by 60-75% compared to typical skyscrapers. The first energy-efficient passive house in Ukraine was the “House of the Sun” designed by architect Tatiana Ernst in the Syretsky district of Kyiv, founded in 2007.

External sun protection systems play an important role in the process of increasing the energy efficiency of the building. Although they are essentially additional architectural elements, they directly affect the energy efficiency of the building as a whole. Our company is one of the leading developers of such systems in Ukraine. By the way, we started to implement the principles of energy efficiency by installing, for example, photovoltaic and solar system at our production and office base in Cherkasy, the first refueling station in the city for electric vehicles, garbage sorting tanks, which save up to 25 thousand UAH per month.

According to the European standard EN 14501, which describes the main energy and light characteristics of solar radiation, there are five classes of efficiency of the sun protection system (SPS). Most outdoor sun protection systems, such as awnings, façade blinds, reflexols, etc., have the highest 3rd and 4th efficiency classes.
The use of external sun protection systems cuts off more than 90% of the thermal energy that previously led to heating in the hot seasons.
The main indicator by which their efficiency is evaluated is the solar factor Gtot – the total amount of thermal energy in %, which entered the room through the SPS and glass. If you install an external SPS with a value of this factor of 0.125, which corresponds to the 3rd efficiency class, then the inside will get 4 times less solar energy (with a single double-glazed window with low-emission coating).

For example, this applies to the Screen Spectra ZIP system from MANEZH – external fabric blinds made of special fabric. Calculations show that if they use Soltis 86 material, then only 12% of thermal energy enters the room, and with Soltis 92 – only 5%. The ZIP-guide functions as a zipper, securely fixing the canvas, due to which the product can withstand wind gusts up to 90 km / h. Due to the special structure of the canvas, the inspection is maintained, microventilation is provided, natural light enters, the fabric does not get wet and does not burn out in the sun, and also serves as a mosquito net.
When choosing facade blinds C-80 and Z-90 from MANEZH in the case of fully closed slats only 7% of solar energy goes inside, and when open at 45 ° – only 14%. It is also estimated that such systems reduce the room temperature by 5-7 ° C in the heat and retain heat in winter due to the formation of an air cushion, reducing heat loss by up to 40%.

Awnings and tents reflect up to 90% of solar radiation. Laboratory studies have shown that the air temperature under the awnings can be almost 20 degrees lower than outside it. External SPS are easily integrated into the energy efficiency system of any building. Their use reduces energy consumption for air conditioning (room temperature is at least 7 ° C lower); maintains the balance of temperature and humidity in the room; prevents the heating of glass and the formation of the greenhouse effect; ensures the preservation of color balance in the room, the ability to adjust the lighting level and more.
By the way, in the first active building in Ukraine (not only rationally consumes energy, but also produces it at the expense of, for example, various engineering systems) Optima House in the village of Mykulychi 20 km from Kyiv installed reflexes and awnings MANEZH. This is a residential building with an area of 128 square meters. m with an attic floor and a terrace, designed by architect Alexander Kucheryavy, which consumes only 8 thousand kilowatt-hours per year (for comparison: a normal house spends all 20 thousand kilowatt-hours per year).
