Cloud transformation – what opportunities are opening up for business

03/ 04/ 2024
Ukrainian businesses are demonstrating resilience and innovation by actively using cloud technologies, artificial intelligence, and data analytics to optimize and grow, even in times of war. To learn more about the possibilities of new technologies and their implementation by Ukrainian companies to remain competitive and develop, the European Business Association in partnership with SoftwareOne held an event dedicated to cloud transformation and its prospects for 2024-2026. Anton Skazochkin, СЕЕ Service Line Lead-Cloud Services at SoftwareOne CEE in Central and Eastern Europe, presented data on the global cloud services market, which is projected to reach $1 trillion by 2024. Demand for migration and modernization of cloud infrastructures is also growing - by 2028, 70% of workloads are expected to be migrated from on-premises systems. Skazochkin also noted the rapid development of the AI ecosystem: 40% of service projects already have AI-related components. Nevertheless, 42% of organizations experience a shortage of qualified personnel for AI implementation. Cloud migration and AI adoption are becoming more common, but it is important to approach these processes in a balanced manner, taking into account the risks and the need to develop staff skills. Oleksii Kolomiitsev, BDE Lead Cloud Services & SAP, SoftwareOne Central and Eastern Europe, presented successful approaches to cloud transformation, which brings a number of advantages, such as flexibility, scalability, availability, and disaster recovery. However, it also has challenges, including data security, lack of experience, and the need for rapid migration. The 7Rs strategy (Rehost, Refactor, Replatform, Retain, Retire, Repurchase, Relocate) makes it possible to evaluate and migrate applications to the cloud with maximum efficiency. Oleksiy also spoke about FinOps, a culture that helps optimize the cost of cloud services. SoftwareOne has the experience and tools for successful cloud transformation and cost optimization. Pavlo Shaternik, Client Technology Lead, Microsoft, presented on artificial intelligence (AI) and its development. AI is a rapidly developing industry, and Microsoft is actively investing in this area. Microsoft products such as Windows, Office, and Azure are already using AI to improve their capabilities. OpenAI is a research laboratory that cooperates with Microsoft. Microsoft is actively investing in OpenAIs developments, which gives companies access to advanced AI technologies. Microsoft also takes security and ethical issues of AI use seriously. The company has developed principles of responsible use that are publicly available. OpenAI Enterprise Service is a special service available in Azure. It allows corporate clients to use OpenAI in a closed environment so that their data is not publicly distributed. The participants of the event were also demonstrated the functions of Microsoft Copilot, a tool that increases the efficiency of work on a PC. According to Leonid Polupan, Country Manager of Microsoft in Ukraine and the Baltic States, technology plays a big role in the ability of businesses to survive in difficult times of military invasion. According to his observations, the perception of the role of technology has changed. Due to constant cyberattacks, companies have begun to rethink the role of cybersecurity, perceiving it as a guarantee of the countrys and companies existence. Secondly, cloud services have become a strategic foundation for maintaining business resilience through features such as geo-redundancy, scalability, and cost optimization. Azure cloud services have helped many Ukrainian organizations survive physical attacks, power outages, and other emergencies. Thirdly, companies have begun to prioritize the need for innovation and the use of artificial intelligence to increase competitiveness, retrain, and meet the needs of customers and employees. Leonid showed statistics and practical examples of how artificial intelligence increases the profitability, productivity, and security of companies. Speakers of the panel discussion Transformation in the Cloud. What are the opportunities of DATA&AI for Ukrainian business. Thus, KredoBank started migrating part of its infrastructure to the cloud even before the full-scale invasion of Russia. After February 24, 2022, the National Bank of Ukraine allowed all financial institutions to transfer all data and systems outside the country. Despite this possibility, Kredobank rationally approaches the use of cloud technologies taking into account architectural limitations, privacy and security requirements, as well as financial considerations. Some systems are not compatible with cloud platforms, which complicates their migration, and the migration itself can be expensive, as in addition to paying for cloud services, there are additional costs for adapting and customizing systems. Nevertheless, cloud migration can be a beneficial step for any business looking to increase the flexibility and scalability of resources and improve data security. Despite the challenging times, DTEK continues to invest in innovation and digitalization. This approach allows the company to optimize its processes, increase efficiency and reliability. DTEK uses AI to optimize power generation, which leads to resource savings and better balancing of the power system; predict equipment failure, which allows for timely repairs and prevention of accidents; and solve other tasks related to energy asset management. In addition to AI, DTEK and IT company MODUS X are launching a digital twin pilot at DTEK Grids and are already using a digital twin for DTEK Naftogaz. Among the tasks that digital twins can perform is the use of virtual copies of objects to simulate various operating scenarios and optimize system parameters. Data analytics is also an important tool for DTEK. It allows the company to forecast electricity production, which helps to better plan the operation of the power system, identify bottlenecks in the networks, which makes it possible to eliminate them in time and improve the reliability of electricity supply. Innovations and digitalization are DTEKs strategic development direction, which will allow the company to remain a leader in the Ukrainian energy market and operate successfully in the face of constant change. Volodymyr Krasotin, Digital Transformation Director at Darnytsia, said that the company actively uses Microsoft Big Data and Synapse solutions for data analytics. This approach allows Darnytsia to obtain valuable insights into large amounts of information. As a result, decisions are made more efficiently and productivity increases. For example, the data is used to forecast product stocks in pharmacies, optimize marketing campaigns, solve other tasks related to supply chain management, development of new products, and pricing. This practice makes it possible to optimize warehouse stocks, minimize the risks of overstocking and shortages of medicines, better understand the needs of your customers, and target advertising campaigns to more promising groups. An important condition for the successful implementation of data analytics projects is the support of top management and communication between different departments of the company. For data to be truly useful, it must be accessible to everyone who needs it and used to make better decisions. We thank the speakers for their insights on how to optimize resources in the cloud and for the opportunity to discover the benefits of innovative cloud services. We would also like to thank our partner SoftwareOne for their support in organizing the event.
