EBA informs about the new EU requirements on the processing of agricultural products

06/ 03/ 2020
The European Business Association draws the attention of the agrarians to the EUs decision to reduce the maximum residue levels of chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl in agricultural and food products. The new rules will apply both to food produced in the EU and also to imports, with effect from October 2020. More information can be found on the official website of the European Commission at the link. Accordingly, imports of agricultural products containing more than 0.01 mg/kg of these substances into the EU will be prohibited starting from October 2020. This indicator is extremely low, which can significantly complicate the import to the EU of the products manufactured and stored with the use of these substances. For the reference: Chlorpyrifos (sometimes referred to as chlorpyrifos-ethyl) and chlorpyrifos-methyl are insecticides used to control insect pests on a range of crops. Chlorpyrifos-methyl is also used to treat stored cereal grain and empty warehouses. This applies to the following products: cereals, namely rapeseed, sunflower, soybean, and corn; products of animal origin; fruits and vegetables. We recommend that you read the relevant new EU rules: On chlorpyrifos-methyl - https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg_impl/2020/17/oj On chlorpyrifos - https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg_impl/2020/18/oj
