ESG assessment: a reputational story or a real business development tool?

22/ 05/ 2026
This question was at the centre of an Impact Talks interview held within the framework of the European Business Association’s ESG Hub. The discussion focused on the new Ukrainian ESG product, Scorex, presented by Kateryna Davydova, Founder and CEO of the company. The goal of SCX Sustainability Scorex is to create an independent ESG assessment of companies based on European standards and to minimise greenwashing through a clear methodology and a technology-driven approach. During the discussion, participants explored: why ESG assessments are becoming increasingly important for businesses, investors, and grant programmes; how sustainability ratings operate globally and why Ukraine still lacks an independent assessment tool; why policies and sustainability declarations alone are no longer sufficient; how the war is reshaping ESG approaches by introducing new criteria, including safety and cybersecurity, veteran-focused practices, and more. Today, the Ukrainian context is shaping an entirely new perspective on business resilience. According to the speakers, Ukraine has the potential to move “from the role of a victim to that of a strong mentor”, as the experience of Ukrainian companies is becoming increasingly relevant worldwide. Participants also discussed the controversial perception of ESG ratings. In particular, Serhii Ivashchenko, Head of the EBA ESG Hub and Head of Government Relations, CSR and Sustainability at METRO Ukraine, raised the issue of trust in assessments and the risks of ratings turning into a mere formality or a form of greenwashing. At the same time, Kateryna emphasised that transparent methodologies and independent assessments should help businesses better understand their own level of sustainability and identify areas for growth. We thank all participants for the engaging discussion and practical insights into the future of ESG in Ukraine! https://youtu.be/ViyMsWSl_T8
