Leaders’ dialogue: BASF and Astarta-Kyiv set new standards in agribusiness

25/ 03/ 2025
A recent meeting brought together the leadership of BASF and the agricultural holding Astarta-Kyiv. During their visit to Ukraine, Livio Tedeschi, President of the Agricultural Solutions Division, and Michael Wagner, Vice President of Agricultural Solutions for EMEA North, met with Astarta’s top management. The participants discussed their collaboration strategy, prospects for mutual development, and the implementation of carbon programmes in Ukraine. Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Ukraine’s economy and a key source of export revenue for the state budget. Amid global challenges, the agricultural sector has gained even greater significance, not only for Ukraine’s internal market but also for global food security. Therefore, the meeting covered both current operational matters and future innovative solutions, which have long been an integral part of BASF’s partnership with Ukrainian agricultural holdings, particularly Astarta-Kyiv. Today, Ukrainian farmers face a variety of challenges, ranging from climate change to economic disruptions. That is why BASF views this partnership as a comprehensive support system for agribusiness – from extensive advisory assistance to innovative products. The company meets these needs by providing expert recommendations and a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality agricultural solutions. “Cooperation with Ukrainian agribusinesses, such as Astarta-Kyiv, is of strategic importance to BASF. We aim to jointly introduce innovative solutions and support the development of Ukraine’s agricultural sector,” said Livio Tedeschi. He noted that since the full-scale invasion, BASF has transformed its logistics chains, successfully restoring the uninterrupted supply of products. As traditional insurance models ceased to function as expected, responsible partnerships became critically important, enabling the creation of new business processes. To minimise liquidity challenges faced by farmers, BASF actively collaborates with banks, implementing specialised financing programmes for small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises. These initiatives help provide farmers with the necessary resources to navigate the season successfully, even under difficult conditions. All participants of the meeting recognise the potential of the Ukrainian market and the attractiveness of further investment. They emphasised that despite the ongoing war, Ukrainian agricultural companies remain focused on long-term development. They are actively implementing sustainable farming practices, particularly working to reduce CO₂ emissions. The partners also discussed BASF’s practical experience in carbon reduction programmes already implemented in various countries and the potential application of pilot projects in Ukraine. Overall, BASF has ambitious plans and views the Ukrainian market as more than just a producer and consumer of new products—it sees it as a source of innovative agricultural solutions. Therefore, new projects are being developed in collaboration with research institutes and agri-innovation hubs. BASF firmly believes that even the most complex idea can be realised when working alongside responsible and proactive partners.
