Citi Ukraine Supports the Unbroken Charitable Foundation in Acquiring a Microscope for Neurosurgical Operations

13/ 03/ 2025
Citi Ukraine has provided a $900,000 grant to the Unbroken Charitable Foundation, enabling the purchase of a state-of-the-art Arveo 8 GLOW400 microscope.   This high-precision equipment will allow doctors to perform complex neurosurgical procedures, including the removal of dangerous fragments from the brain and spinal cord, as well as the treatment of brain tumors. Over the course of a year, the microscope will facilitate approximately 250 neurosurgical operations. Patients will receive the necessary care at the foundation’s rehabilitation center in Lviv. Alexander McWhorter, Citi Country Officer for Ukraine, stated: “Supporting healthcare is one of Citi’s key missions in Ukraine. Investing in medical advancements saves lives and shapes the future. We believe that funding the purchase of this microscope is a valuable contribution to the development of neurosurgery during wartime and will create opportunities for successful patient treatment at the Unbroken Rehabilitation Center.” The Arveo 8 GLOW400 microscope will provide surgeons at the Unbroken Rehabilitation Center with the ability to remove even the tiniest fragments with maximum precision. Its advanced technology enables visualization of the smallest damaging particles, allowing for their removal without causing additional harm to brain and spinal cord tissues. Oleksandr Kobzarev, Executive Director of the UNBROKEN Charitable Foundation, emphasized: “We are deeply grateful to Citi Ukraine for their generous financial support, as well as to the Meest Foundation for co-financing this initiative. This is a powerful example of social responsibility and dedication to addressing complex humanitarian challenges. Together, we demonstrate that collaboration between charitable organizations, businesses, and skilled medical professionals can achieve extraordinary results. This equipment will save lives and help restore the health of our defenders with severe brain injuries. Thank you for being part of our mission!” Beyond treating shrapnel wounds, the microscope will be instrumental in surgical interventions for brain tumors. It will enable surgeons to remove even the most complex neoplasms while precisely distinguishing between tumor boundaries and healthy tissue. Doctors at UNBROKEN highlight the microscope’s significance: “This device is crucial for performing complex surgeries to extract small yet highly dangerous fragments from the brain and spinal cord of our defenders.” Since February 2022, Citi and the Citi Foundation have donated over $6.5 million to humanitarian initiatives, including reopening schools, providing legal and psychological support for women, and assisting Ukrainian refugees in finding safe havens abroad. * * * About Citi Ukraine Citi Ukraine is part of Citigroup, one of the four largest U.S. banks by assets.
