Business and government will jointly develop Ukraine’s position on the new regulation of CO2 emissions

  Today, at the initiative of the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection and under the auspices of the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine for European Integration Mr. Vadym Prystaiko, a web dialogue between representatives of the government, European institutions and business was held on the basis of the EBA Committee on Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development. Among the 45 participants of the online Committee meeting were high officials of the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection represented by Deputy Minister Mr. Oleksiy Ryabchyn and Deputy Minister Ms. Iryna Stavchuk, the Ministry for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture - Deputy Minister Mr. Taras Kachka, the Mission of Ukraine to the EU - Deputy Head of the Mission Mr. Roman Andarak, Head of the Energy and Environment Support Group of Ukraine to the European Commission Mr.Thorsten Wellert. The interests of the business community were represented by top-managers of the largest Ukrainian companies Arcelor Mittal Kryvyi Rih, Metinvest, DTEK, MHP, Kernel, Ukrgazvydobuvannya, Dickerhoff Cement, Interpipe, GMK-Center, Ukrlandfarming, Novaagro, Kryvyi Rih Cement, Recycling Solutions. The main topic for discussion was the implementation of carbon cross-border regulation in the EU, as well as the issue of nationally determined contributions to the Paris Agreement and the system of monitoring, reporting, and verification of greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, the member companies of the Committee expressed the need for reasonable and gradual involvement of Ukraine in this process and suggested their active assistance in the development of state environmental policy. At the same time, the Office of the Vice Prime Minister for European Integration, the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection, and the Ministry for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture assured the participants that the protection of the domestic producer and the economy of Ukraine will always be a priority in any political decisions. As a result of the meeting, it was agreed to develop a platform for joint work on the mechanism of cross-border carbon regulation, NDCs and the European Green Agreement based on the EBA Committee on Industrial Ecology and Sustainable. The European Business Association thanks all the participants for a constructive discussion and hopes for the successful continuation of this practice.
