Business discussed language issues with the relevant Verkhovna Rada Committee

21/ 04/ 2021
The European Business Association supports the state policy on the need to ensure the comprehensive development and functioning of the Ukrainian language and has always worked closely with the relevant Parliamentary Committee and the Office of the Commissioner for informing business on Law №2704-VIII On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as State language . On April 20, there was an online round table on problems with the application of the rules of the Law On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language. The event was attended not only by representatives of the business community but also by representatives of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, in particular, Mr. Mykola Kniazhytsky and Mr. Volodymyr Vyatrovych, as well as the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language – Mr. Taras Kremen. The meeting was moderated by Svitlana Mykhailovska, EBA Deputy Director for Advocacy. View the video of the meeting Business representatives drew the attention of the authorities to certain provisions of the Law, which, in their opinion, need clarification or some revision. The participants of the round table agreed that the EBA will prepare a formal request to the VRU Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy with a request to clarify the correct application of certain provisions of the Law, for example, the possibility of specifying addresses of foreign factories, names of unregistered trademarks and cosmetic ingredients with the use of letters of the Latin alphabet. The same applies to the possibility to use common words and abbreviations, such as Stop, Start, OK in software interfaces in English or using the letters of the Latin alphabet by analogy with the rule specified in Article 30 of the Law. The European Business Association looks forward to receiving a comprehensive explanation of the application of the provisions of Law №2704-VIII, which would give representatives of the business community a clear understanding of the interpretation of certain rules. Separately, the EBA would like to thank the MPs and the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language for the professional discussion and willingness to cooperate with business.   Be the first to learn about the latest EBA news with our Telegram-channel – EBAUkraine.
