24/ 03/ 2021
At the end of March, SoftServes Open Eyes charity fund opened a ‘Positive room’ for the youngest patients of the Dnipro Regional Clinical Hospital. Space was created in the Department of Reconstructive Surgery thanks to charitable donations of SoftServe, its employees, as well as other contributors. Up to 30 children from all over the region stay in this department of the Dnipro Regional Childrens Clinical Hospital every day with the most serious, life-threatening diseases. “Children from birth to 18 are treated here. Each of them stays in the hospital for several weeks up to months. This is a time when their peers can study, play, and meet friends. That is why we have created a comfortable space for children within the hospital, which will provide an opportunity for recreation, entertainment, and study,” said Yuliia Lozinska, Director of the Dnipro office of SoftServe. “We treat children with the most serious diseases: congenital malformations, chemical burns of the esophagus, and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, with tumors that require surgery. The room is a kind of island in their hospital routine, where children can spend time with animators and volunteers, who distract them from illness, said Oleksandr Gladkyi, head of the Department of Reconstructive Surgery of Dnipro Regional Childrens Clinical Hospital. Children who are in treatment for a long time are forced to miss kindergarten or school. Young patients lose the opportunity to communicate and play with peers, there are gaps in their socialization. Accordingly, the Charity Fund team set itself the task of creating zones for childrens education and recreation. According to Roman Perepichka, project coordinator at the Open Eyes charity fund, the search for a design solution and functional filling of the room took place together with doctors of departments and designers - specialists in creating inclusive space in hospitals, Alyona Chursynova and Mariia Melets. Patients can already use the room as a play and study area. Here the teachers can also conduct classes and various masterclasses, which was one of the key tasks of creating the Positive Room. The Positive Rooms project started in October 2017. Then, for the first time, the Fond set up a Positive Room at the Wrocław Childrens Clinic of Endocrinology and Diabetology (Poland) in partnership with the Pozytywne.com Association. The rooms are always different in size, as it all depends on the specifics of a particular department, but each has zoning, created in cooperation by designers, doctors, teachers, psychologists, and other professionals. After successful implementation, the project was decided to implement in Ukraine, with five such rooms already created. Open Eyes charity fund is working on creating a similar room in Lviv. This year it is planned to start fundraising for the Positive Rooms in Kyiv and Chernivtsi. The project is funded through a fundraising platform.
