Baker McKenzie strengthens cooperation with Ukrainian universities to foster development of legal profession

01/ 02/ 2024
The commitment of Baker McKenzies Kyiv office to fostering the legal profession remains unwavering despite todays challenging times. Our office continues to partner with a number of Ukrainian universities nurturing legal talents and shaping future legal practitioners. In August 2023, Managing Partner Serhiy Chorny joined the Supervisory Board of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. By serving on the supervisory board, Serhiy will support the growth and advancement of the universitys educational landscape. In further demonstrating Baker McKenzies commitment to academic excellence and collaboration, Serhiy Chorny undertook a vital role in reviewing the bachelors and masters degree programs of the Law Department of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, which is important for the departments accreditation scheduled for the 2024-2025 academic year. Building on the impact of Baker McKenzies 30th anniversary scholarship program, in addition to last years two scholarships to students of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the Kyiv office has extended another two annual scholarship opportunities — to the law students of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and of the Institute of Law of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, totaling four scholarships in 2023-2024 academic year. This year, Baker McKenzies guest course on commercial law for the masters degree students of the Law Department of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy marked its fifth anniversary. Over three disciplines, including compliance, procedural law and energy law, 10 lectures and six seminars, our Counsel Mariana Marchuk and Kseniia Prokhur and Partner Andrii Moskalyk shared their practical experience, solidifying academic foundations in future lawyers. The Kyiv office further amplified its impact on legal education by joining for the second academic year the teaching staff of the International Law Department at the Institute of International Relations. Its captivating lectures and seminars explore diverse topics, such as comparative civil procedure, labor law, IP law, international financial law and international private law. Counsel Kseniia Prokhur and Myroslava Koval-Lavok, Associates Anna Stepanowa and Stepanyda Badovska and Senior Associate Anna Boyko, nurtured the growing talents of law students. Having started in September 2022, we continue with a comprehensive study course on IP/IT law at Yaroslav Mydryi National Law University. Partner Oleksiy Stolyarenko, Counsel Myroslava Koval-Lavok and Senior Associate Anton Kapitonenko organized an immersive learning experience through the Practical Law School with lectures and seminars on the practical aspects of IP/IT law and data protection for the students of the masters degree program of the universitys Law Department. For six consecutive years, Counsel and Head of the Compliance & Investigations Practice Ario Dehghani has taken the Anti-Corruption Compliance certificate course in collaboration with the Anti-Corruption Research and Education Centre at the Kyiv-Mohyla University. For the past seven years, Ario has also held the position of senior lecturer in German law and international law courses at Kyiv Mohyla Academy University. He also serves as the co-director of the German Law Institute at this University.
