Food, Grain and Oilseeds, Dairy

The President has signed the Law aimed at improving the quality of food products consumed by children (Draft Law No. 5148). This legislation seeks to enhance the quality of food products and align Ukrainian food regulations with EU standards. Notably, experts from the European Business Association actively contributed to drafting the text of this document. Once the law is enacted, a maximum limit on trans fatty acids in food products will be established in Ukraine. Additionally, it is important to highlight that the ЕВА’s member companies support the ban on the use of palm oil in traditional dairy products (such as sour cream, fermented milk, cottage cheese, etc.), as outlined in Article 6 of Law No. 1870-IV. Moreover, the ЕВА’s experts emphasize that the dairy industry representatives are fundamentally opposed to replacing milk components (milk fat, milk protein, lactose) with not only palm oil but also any other plant-based or non-dairy animal fats and proteins, such as rapeseed oil or beef fat. The law will also improve the labelling of food products containing refined vegetable oils. The ЕВА extends its gratitude to the author of the law, Dmytro Solomchuk, and the Verkhovna Rada Agrarian Policy Committee for their constructive discussions on banning the use of palm oil and/or its fractions in Ukraine’s food industry, productive cooperation, and consideration of the ЕВАs comments and proposals. We believe this law will contribute to improving the regulatory framework for issues related to the safety and quality of childrens food and enhancing the overall quality of food products.
