Consumer Electronics

24/ 02/ 2015
Adoption of New Standards in the Sphere of Energy Labelling of Consumer Electronics Due to the efforts of the Consumer Electronics Committee of the European Business Association, the Order of the Ministry for Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine №1481 from 29 December 2014 providing a list of national standards essential for the energy labeling of refrigerators and washing machines was adopted and officially published on 21 January 2015. Background: One of the key problems in the field of technical regulations is lack of the national standards harmonized with the relevant standards of the European Union. In this regard, the European Business Association (the EBA) continuously supported the idea of adopting the required standards by a “confirmation method”, which is faster and cheaper than the elaboration of standards. Moreover, the EBA Consumer Electronics Committee (the Committee) paid significant attention to lack of harmonized standards in the sphere of energy labelling. This problem became even more essential after adoption of the Technical Regulations on Energy Labeling of Consumer Electronics by Governmental Resolution №702 from 7 August 2013. Thus, the Committee strongly supported the necessity to adopt standards on energy labeling and actively cooperated with the Ministry for Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine (the Ministry) and with the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine (the State Agency) in order to facilitate this process. Thus, due to the common efforts these standards were included into the National Standardization Plan of Ukraine adopted by “confirmation method” in 2014. The EBA is pleased to announce that the list of standards related to the energy labeling of refrigerators and washing machines was adopted by the Order of the Ministry №1481 from 29 December 2014 (the Order №1481). Additionally, we inform that these standards will take effect from 1 January 2016. Besides, the Ministry has adopted and published a number of other standards essential for the consumer electronics industry, in particular related to electromagnetic compatibility, low voltage, etc. We would like to express our gratitude to the Ministry and to the State Agency for their active involvement and adoption of the Order №1481. Moreover, we would like to thank the Committee members who contributed to our lobbying efforts that resulted in this success. At the same time, we will continue our activity aimed at the adoption of other essential business standards.
