The Role of a Heat-Recovery Ventilation System in the WELL Building Standard Concept. The WELL Building Standard is an international building assessment system that focuses on how people feel inside these buildings. It is not a government regulation or an EU directive. It is a voluntary market standard governed by three independent organizations: IWBI (International WELL Building Institute) — develops and updates the standard’s requirements, and provides training and certification for professionals (WELL AP) GBCI (Green Business Certification Inc.)—conducts independent third-party certification of projects. It accepts documentation and organizes on-site inspections. Independent assessors (WELL Assessors)—accredited professionals who conduct audits directly on-site. Interestingly, the certificate is valid for only 3 years, after which the project must undergo a re-inspection to renew it. This is what distinguishes WELL from most building standards, where certification is obtained once and for all. The WELL standard covers 10 key areas for assessing indoor well-being, including: Air Water Nourishment Light Movement Thermal Comfort Sound Materials Mind Based on the points earned, the project is awarded one of the following levels: Bronze / Silver / Gold / Platinum. One of the key categories in WELL is “Air”—air quality. It involves creating conditions under which the indoor air remains fresh and comfortable for occupants, as well as controlling potential pollutants and ensuring adequate air exchange. This is where a ventilation system with heat recovery plays a crucial role, as it ensures a constant and controlled air exchange cycle—exactly what the WELL standard requires. The heat recovery unit helps remove stale air and excess moisture from the space, while ensuring a steady supply of fresh air.
