Is Ukraine swimming or surfing in new technologies today?

02/ 06/ 2023
Yesterday, an Innovation Day was held at the European Business Association. The focus was on technologies that could help Ukraine win the war more quickly, innovations in education, ecology, green energy, overall trends in innovation, and similar topics. It was mentioned that, in particular, robotics, sensory, optical, audio, and cybersecurity technologies are vital for Ukraine. At the same time, besides technology, Ukrainians demonstrate incredible adaptability, which helps to succeed. Therefore, it is essential to start thinking about expanding and imparting skills to children, ensuring the countrys continued progress. And for now, answering the question from the headline, it still seems that Ukraine is swimming in new technologies. However, thanks to the ambition, charisma, and diligence of Ukrainians, we certainly have everything ahead of us! A separate discussion was devoted to the development of education and science. Participants agreed that the current focus on innovation in science is severely lacking. Moreover, there is no well-thought-out mechanism for the practical implementation of research, similar to the existence of technology parks in Israel where successful scientific projects are implemented. This requires changes, and the fact that current scientific developments are owned by the state hinders their further implementation. Therefore, it would be desirable for scientists to start benefiting and growing from the adoption of the research they create. Additionally, it would be beneficial for Ukraine to have a base where fundamental research being conducted can be accessed and reviewed. At the same time, education also needs significant reform in the country, and participants supported the idea that it is better to have fewer higher education institutions but let them be of higher quality. One of the mentioned ideas is that Ukraine will gradually transition to private universities, as it is a global practice. For example, students can choose their subjects, debate, and present their opinions to professors. Unfortunately, only a few institutions in Ukraine provide such freedom. Overall, for the development of education, funding is crucial, as well as support for both humanities and mathematical education, investments from businesses, including temporary ones (such as having business employees teach at universities, as the system significantly lacks instructors with different experiences and perspectives), and similar initiatives. Thanks to the speakers for the engaging discussions and valuable insights!
