Business supports the ban on the use of disposable packages

28/ 01/ 2021
Yesterday, EBA Retail Committee member companies discussed the possible refusal of distribution of plastic bags with thickness below 50 microns which are available free of charge in the supermarkets. This was discussed during a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine for Digital Development, Digital Transformations, and Digitization – Mr. Ruslan Strilets. The abovementioned initiative is proposed by the draft Law on Restricting the Circulation of Plastic Bags on the Territory of Ukraine 2051-1. It is required to refuse plastic bags after 6 months of the entry into force of the Law and 9 months after the ban on oxo-biodegradable plastics for sale to consumers. So far, the draft law has been passed in the first reading. According to preliminary information, the Parliament will likely support it this week as a whole. The companies expressed support for the Ministrys aspiration to gradually refuse plastics to improve the environmental situation in the country. The same practice is used in EU countries. However, the EBA member companies put emphasis on: · the need to develop framework legislation on waste management, · the need to extend the term of entry into force of the draft law to 1.5 years as a new supplier of packages with appropriate requirements and labeling can be selected only based on tenders and by-laws, · the need to consider the international experience in the development of bylaws because in Ukraine’s market a large number of imported goods containing plastics as a part of the packaging, and therefore – they already have appropriate markings, · the need to consider the practical use of plastics for packing certain groups of goods by weight (meat, cheese, cookies, etc.). The European Business Association thanks the Deputy Minister and participants for the meeting. We hope the voice of business will be heard!   Be the first to learn about the latest EBA news with our Telegram-channel – EBAUkraine.
