Shelter the Sky over Nuclear Plants in Ukraine

08/ 03/ 2022
DTEK, the biggest private investor in the Ukrainian energy sector, presents an urgent and crucial request. DTEK asks the international partners and friends of Ukraine to call on NATO to shelter the sky over Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPPs) as well as intensify efforts to prevent acts of nuclear terrorism, such as the seizure of the Chernobyl NPP (and its exclusion zone) and Zaporiz’ka NPP, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. By air, land, and sea, Russia continues its devastating war in Ukraine, a European democracy of 44 million people. Russian forces are bombing city centers, killing thousands of innocent people, destroying infrastructure, and the normal lives of free people. The shelling and fire at the Zaporiz’ka nuclear power plant on March 4th was a reminder of how dangerous the war in Ukraine is for all of Europe. The attack triggered global alarm and fear of a catastrophe that could dwarf Chernobyl in 1986. In an emotional speech, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he feared an explosion that would be “the end for everyone. The end for Europe. The evacuation of Europe.” DTEK cannot wait until the criminal actions of the Russian regime lead to an irreversible catastrophe on a global scale. DTEK asks you to call on NATO to immediately impose no-fly zones over each Ukrainian nuclear power plant. Please kindly announce this publicly by any possible means on behalf of your organization or company. You can sign the statement or a letter indicating your position and post it on social media.
