Bringing medical innovations into everyday healthcare requires more than developing new technologies. It also depends on predictable regulation, sustainable financing, access to data, and effective cooperation between public authorities, businesses, and healthcare institutions. These issues were at the centre of a discussion organised by the European Business Association and Global Business for Ukraine focusing on healthcare innovation and Ukrainian-Swiss cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n Kyrylo Goncharuk<\/b>, Founder & CEO of CheckEye, shared his experience developing AI-based screening solutions for chronic diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. He noted that bringing a medical innovation from an initial idea to commercial launch can take around four years, with further time required to enter new markets. Complex regulatory requirements and the need to secure support from different stakeholders remain significant barriers to implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n Benjamin Bargetzi<\/b>, CEO of MindGuard, presented an alternative approach to applying AI in mental health. Rather than relying on AI chatbots, MindGuard uses gamification and personalised recommendations to encourage healthy habits, physical activity, breathing exercises, creative expression, and social interaction. The approach illustrates how digital tools can complement existing support systems while encouraging users to engage with the world beyond their screens. MindGuard is working with Ukrainian HRDs to help their employees regain focus, recovery, and productivity with proven neuroscience methods<\/span><\/p>\n Miroslav Saban<\/b>,\u00a0Government and Public Affairs Leader of Philips Central & Eastern Europe, emphasised the role of technology in addressing healthcare workforce shortages, staff burnout, delayed patient care, and the growing burden of chronic diseases. AI can help automate routine processes, support clinical decision-making, and improve the efficiency of diagnostic services. At the same time, protecting patient data and ensuring the safe use of technology remain essential.<\/span><\/p>\n A major challenge for Ukraine is moving from successful pilot projects to solutions that can be implemented across the healthcare system. <\/span>Inna Maslenchuk<\/b>, who advised the Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine on digitalisation and healthcare innovation, highlighted the Ministry of Health\u2019s work on a proposed MedTech regulatory sandbox that would allow eligible digital health and medical technology solutions to be tested in clinical settings. The initiative is intended to support evidence-based assessments of safety, effectiveness, scalability, and potential cost savings, helping innovators understand the route from testing to wider adoption.<\/span><\/p>\n Access to depersonalised health data is another priority. Such data can support research and the development of new solutions, while Ukraine\u2019s experience in wartime healthcare, trauma treatment, and rehabilitation may also contribute to European research, subject to appropriate data governance and safeguards.<\/span><\/p>\n Oliver Gierlichs<\/b>, representing Bayer Ukraine, outlined the importance of prioritising employee safety while maintaining business operations. The company has adapted its logistics and distribution arrangements, diversified storage locations, and worked with partners to address challenges such as power outages affecting cold storage.<\/span><\/p>\n His experience underlined several practical lessons for businesses operating in Ukraine: identify critical products and processes, prepare alternative supply routes, maintain clear communication channels, and empower local teams to respond quickly when circumstances change. Long-term partnerships and employee support are equally important to operational resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n Philippe Br\u00fcgger<\/b>,\u00a0Deputy Head of Cooperation of the Embassy of Switzerland to Ukraine, outlined Switzerland\u2019s long-standing engagement in the sector, dating back to a maternal health project in 1997. The Swiss cooperation programme for Ukraine provides CHF 1.5 billion over four years, with healthcare among its priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n Cooperation includes technical assistance on healthcare governance and financing, bilateral projects in mental health, medical education, trauma rehabilitation, and disease prevention, as well as partnerships involving Swiss universities and companies. Switzerland is also supporting energy autonomy measures for primary healthcare centres to help maintain services during power outages.<\/span><\/p>\n Mattei Batruch<\/b>, CEO of Rehab Bridge, highlighted the value of combining Swiss expertise and resources with Ukraine\u2019s practical experience and adaptability. He noted the progress Ukraine has made in physiotherapy and rehabilitation over the past decade, while emphasising the challenges facing healthcare professionals working in extraordinary circumstances.
