On 21 July, the European Business Association’s Logistics Committee held a meeting with Volodymyr Ivashchenko, Board Member and Director of Freight Transportation at JSC Ukrzaliznytsia.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the Ukrzaliznytsia team presented the key areas it is currently focusing on. One of its priorities is enhancing transparency in freight wagon fleet management. The company has already introduced several solutions to improve the transparency of wagon tracking and is continuing to develop additional mechanisms.<\/p>\n
According to Ukrzaliznytsia representatives, the company plans to introduce a mixed wagon allocation model. Approximately 60\u201370% of the fleet will be allocated to customers under long-term contracts, while the remaining wagons will be distributed through Prozorro auctions or in accordance with the standard allocation procedure. This approach is expected to make access to wagons more predictable and transparent for the market.<\/p>\n
Ukrzaliznytsia is also placing a strong emphasis on digitalisation<\/strong>. The company is developing an internal application for employees to improve fleet management, alongside new digital services for customers. In the future, businesses will be able to track wagon movements in real time, receive delivery time updates, and access other key operational data. Regulatory deregulation<\/strong> also remains one of the company’s long-term priorities.<\/p>\n To improve operational efficiency, Ukrzaliznytsia also plans to introduce a train movement monitoring system at railway stations<\/strong>, enabling faster responses to disruptions and helping minimise operational irregularities.<\/p>\n Continuing the discussion, the Ukrzaliznytsia team shared the latest performance results of its freight business. At present, exports account for almost half (47%) of all freight traffic<\/strong>. At the same time, the company noted that operational performance has deteriorated significantly due to wartime conditions. The main factors include the increased frequency and duration of air raid alerts, a higher volume of repair works, damage to rolling stock caused by Russian attacks, and electricity supply constraints.<\/p>\n Following the presentation, business representatives had the opportunity to discuss the sector’s key challenges with Ukrzaliznytsia’s management.<\/p>\n One of the main issues raised by the business community was the shortage of locomotive traction<\/strong>. Ukrzaliznytsia noted that it is working to secure international financing to renew its locomotive fleet, continues to explore additional procurement opportunities, and is also considering mechanisms for the use of private locomotives.<\/p>\n Another important topic was the revision of freight transportation tariffs<\/strong>.
