On 24 June, an open meeting of the EBA Odesa Encological Working Group\u00a0 \u201cWaste Management for Business: New Requirements, Practical Approaches and Real Challenges\u201d<\/em> took place in Odesa. The event brought together business representatives, members of the European Business Association, members of the Council of Entrepreneurs under the Odesa Regional Military Administration, as well as representatives of the ecologicaldepartments of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Odesa City Council, and the Ecological Management Department of the State Enterprise \u201cAdministration of Seaports of Ukraine\u201d.<\/p>\n

The meeting was opened by Kateryna Morozova, Head of the <\/strong>EBA <\/strong>Southern Ukrainian Office<\/strong>, who emphasized the growing importance of waste management for businesses, particularly in the context of Ukraine\u2019s ongoing alignment of legislation and business practices with European Union standards. The discussion continued with remarks by Vitalii Dankevych, Director of LLC \u201cNVK UKREKOPROM\u201d and Chair of the EBA Odesa Ecological Working Group<\/strong>, who outlined recent developments in the waste management sector and highlighted the practical challenges businesses currently face.<\/p>\n

Participants discussed new legislative requirements, common compliance violations, inspections, licensing procedures, cooperation with contractors, and practical risks related to documentation and traceability across various waste streams, including industrial, hazardous, and medical waste. The legal aspects were presented by Oleksandr Kashulskyi, Deputy Director for Legal Affairs at LLC \u201cNVK UKREKOPROM\u201d<\/strong>, who focused on the new requirements of the Law of Ukraine \u201cOn Waste Management\u201d, the responsibilities of businesses in this area, common violations, risks associated with cooperation with unreliable contractors, and practical recommendations for companies.<\/p>\n

Special attention was paid to the future regulation of the sector, particularly the implementation of the Ministry of Environmental Protection\u2019s digital waste management ecosystem, designed to monitor the entire waste management chain\u2014from generation and transportation to final treatment and disposal. This topic was also addressed by government representatives. According to Iryna Shatokhina, Director of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Odesa Regional Military Administration<\/strong>, \u201cUkraine\u2019s environmental policy is gradually aligning with European standards, while responsible waste management is becoming an integral part of modern business operations.\u201d She noted that this process goes beyond mere compliance with legal requirements and contributes to a more responsible approach to resource use and sustainable development principles.<\/p>\n

The perspective of one of the region\u2019s largest waste generators was also presented by a representative of the Administration of Seaports of Ukraine. Vladyslav Dolynskyi, Head of the Environmental Management Department of the State Enterprise \u2018Administration of Seaports of Ukraine\u2019 (USPA)<\/strong>, noted that the introduction of electronic document management in the waste management sector \u201chas the potential to significantly increase transparency, improve information exchange among market participants, and reduce administrative burdens in the long term.\u201d At the same time, he highlighted the need to further refine deadlines for submitting certain documents and reports applicable to large enterprises.<\/p>\n

The event concluded with an open discussion session, during which participants had the opportunity to ask questions, discuss practical cases, and exchange experiences related to waste management. The meeting was followed by informal networking, allowing attendees to explore opportunities for future cooperation.<\/p>\n
