The efficiency of presentations depends on accuracy and authenticity of information. And also on the right way to present the information you have. In this article we will learn how to use images to make the presentations better. We will use Vladyslav Gorban\u2019s slides as an example.<\/p>\n

Pictures and images appeal to people’s emotions and allow them to memorize the information easily. But not everything is so simple as it looks like.<\/p>\n

Images in presentations have three main features: size, resolution, and logic. It means there are three rules that will lead your presentation to success. Let’s summarize them in one: only large, clear and informative images<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Let’s have a look at these rules in action. We analyzed several slides that Vladyslav had sent us.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Vladyslav took care of the image\u2019s size but, as you can see, the image is not clear.<\/p>\n

Remember, if the image on your screen is a little bit unclear, it means it will be very unclear on projector\u2019s screen. Don\u2019t ignore it. An even uninformed audience will pay attention to it. Even if you are going to send a presentation by e-mail you must be sure that the images are clear.<\/p>\n

All we need to do is to replace the images. I often use flickr.com, unsplash.com and, of course, google-images. In this case, Google helped me. By the way, you can set the image size by selecting the appropriate option in the Tools menu.<\/p>\n

And that’s how it changed our slide:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Yes, it did not become more emotional, because it\u2019s only a map, but it looks much cleaner and simpler to understand. We also removed the image with the symbol of Kyiv because it contradicted the content. As you see, there is nothing difficult.<\/p>\n

We completed three points of the rule in one \u2014 we used a large, clear and relevant image. However, we conveyed the meaning of the title more accurately. If it is emphasized that the service network covers the whole country, it should be more appropriate to use the map; if it\u2019s about Ukraine specifically \u2014 the flag, blazon or symbol.<\/p>\n

All these details influence the audience perception of information you want to share. Let’s turn to problem of using images, which complicate the perception and prevent from understanding your message better.<\/p>\n

The most common issue with images in presentations is the relevance. In other words, the text describes one thing, the image \u2014 another. Or it doesn\u2019t explain anything at all. It often happens when we use something like this:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

These \u201cwhite quys\u201d have been out of fashion since 2000s but some people still use them. Such images look bad and don\u2019t express any emotions. Instead of using them, it is more appropriate to use photos of people. The secret is the less they remind stock photos the better.<\/p>\n

But let’s turn back to our presentation. Fortunately, it doesn\u2019t contain this \u201cwhite guy\u201d. But there are some interesting examples:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Pictures are wonderful. But they have a conflict with the text. If we talk about distance from Kyiv to Paris, the photo of Kyiv should be on the left side, and Paris \u2014 on the right.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A similar story happened with the following slide:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

People find it difficult to read information from right to left because we write and read from the left side. The opposite direction is less comfortable. By analogy, for example, in films there are great chances, that the \u201chero\u201d will come from the left, and the antagonist, on the contrary, \u2014 from the right.<\/p>\n

The same applies to the vertical movement of the eye. According to the law of gravity, it\u2019s natural for things to move from the top. And vice versa, an upright moving seems to be out of gravity, so it’s more difficult to perceive. Please, take into account these subtleties, they work.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The slide with logos is the last slide we want to talk about today. You can see it almost in every presentation. It helps to illustrate clients, partners, sponsors, project participants, etc. Therefore, only one skill of placing the logos in a right way will greatly help you.<\/p>\n

First step to improve this slide is removing the background image. It distracts the attention and doesn\u2019t perform any tasks. In addition, we have already used it on the previous slide, so duplication doesn\u2019t make sense. It can be an exception when we use the same image as a background for all slides, but it\u2019s not so in our presentation. The slide became much cleaner now.<\/p>\n

The next step is to group logos and we do it in such a way that each segment of the company’s activity occupies its own group. In the third step we added names of each segments. It makes an understanding of the content faster and easier. The result looks better:<\/p>\n

These are just a few examples of how you can improve easily and quickly the understanding of information using the suitable images. We haven\u2019t considered how to work with content and haven\u2019t learnt any design rules. And today we just shared some secrets with you of how to make your presentation better. And you can use them right now.<\/p>\n

\"\" Conclusion<\/strong> Images that look unprofessional:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Not clear.<\/li>\n
  2. Not suitable for content.<\/li>\n
  3. Pictures with any signs of those resources where they were stolen.<\/li>\n
  4. Clip-art and a “White Guys”.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Images that work:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Large, in high resolution.<\/li>\n
    2. Suitable for content.<\/li>\n
    3. Emotional, enhancing the opinion.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The rule \u201conly large, clear and informative images\u201d<\/strong> makes your presentations more inspiring and impressive. Such presentations can change people\u2019s attitude to the idea you present, bring together same-minded people and partners, find investors and customers, sell more than you do now. All you need is time. Do not spare it when it comes to create an impressive presentation. And this should be yours.<\/p>\n
