To overcome the immediate consequences of the Kakhovska Hydroelectric Power Plant explosion and prevent the reservoir from triggering, Ukrhydroenergo is working on a project for an upper dam. The dam, which will also serve as a bridge, is expected to be presented on July 10, and construction should begin immediately after the region’s de-occupation. Funding for the dam is planned to be sourced from international donors. This was announced by Ihor Syrota, the CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, during a meeting with companies from the European Business Association on June 14.<\/p>\n
The water level at the Kakhovka reservoir fluctuates between 7 and 8 meters. If the lower part of the dam remains undamaged, the water level may stabilize at approximately 6-7 meters. It would allow sufficient water intake at 12.7 meters after the floods. However, if the lower part of the dam is also damaged, the water level could decrease to 3 meters, corresponding to the riverbed. In such a case, restoring the necessary water level may take one to two years.<\/p>\n
It is crucial to understand that there will be no water supply from the Kakhovka reservoir to the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions until the next flood. The Kakhovka reservoir will not be replenished in the coming months. Therefore, alternative water supplies are being arranged for these regions, particularly for the cities of Kryvyi Rih and Nikopol, through other water pipelines for drinking and technical water. At the same time, Kherson may receive a portion of water from the river downstream.<\/p>\n
Businesses have already reported issues with technical water supply, particularly in Kryvyi Rih. The steel company ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih consumed 2.5 thousand cubic meters of technical water per hour before the Kakhovska HPP explosion. Currently, to conserve water, the water supply for production has been reduced by almost two-thirds to around 1 thousand cubic meters. As a result, the company has been forced to shut down particular units, including the complete halt of steel and rolling production. The situation is somewhat better in the mining department, where a closed water consumption cycle has been established, and reserves are expected to last 2-3 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n After a recent recovery where production levels reached 30-40%, the company has now experienced a decline back to 15-20% due to the water problem. The catastrophe has created technical challenges and customer concerns, who hesitate to place new orders and monitor the situation. However, at ArcelorMittal, they assure that all current orders will be fulfilled without complications, and the management is seeking new approaches to adapt to the current situation and continue operations.<\/p>\n The detonation of the Kakhovska HPP is likely to result in catastrophic environmental consequences and require considerable costs for the region’s restoration. However, analysts at Dragon Capital believe that the immediate negative impact on the Ukrainian economy will be moderate. Economic activity will be relatively unaffected due to several factors, including the shortage of technical and drinking water, reduced steel production, and a decline in exports. Export losses may amount to around 2%. However, there will be significant long-term losses concerning the restoration of infrastructure damages and the region’s agricultural potential.<\/p>\n Specialists from Ukrhydroenergo assert with absolute certainty that the power plant was destroyed due to an internal underwater explosion caused by a substantial amount of explosives. No missile attack could have caused such destruction. The power plant was previously mined in September-October last year. Since then, only Russian military personnel have had access to it. Anton Herashchenko, an expert in national security, is also confident that the Russians destroyed the power plant.
