Khmelnitskyi wins OGP Local Innovation Award for Green Action Plan and Educational Space \u201cGufi Center\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Kyiv, January 5, 2022 \u2013 In December, the Ukrainian city of Khmelnytskyi has received a prestigious Local Innovation Award during the 10th Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit. The nomination was given to the city for its endeavours in building a greener and sustainable community\u2019s economy, in particular for the development of the Green City Action Plan and opening of an interactive waste treatment education space \u201cGufi Center\u201d.<\/p>\n This year, 36 applicants from the European region were competing for the OGP Local Innovation Award, which is highly coveted and brings attention to a city that has an innovative commitment that is new, relevant, feasible and creates value. Ukraine was presented by two cities: Vinnytsia with Liason Offices for Citizen Participation project that took a third place and this year\u2019s winner Khmelnytskyi with Formation of the Green Course Action Plan project. Furthermore, Ukraine also won OGP Impact Award for an electronic trading system Prozorro.<\/p>\n The establishment of the Green Course Action Plan (GCAP) and a waste treatment educational space for schoolchildren, students and adults are launched within the Modernization of solid waste infrastructure in Khmelnytskyi project as part of the EBRD umbrella program Green Cities. The project is co-financed by the EBRD and an investment grant from the EU Neighborhood Investment Platform and implemented by Smart Environment Khmelnytskyi Implementation Office and technical consultant experts Egis.<\/p>\n “For the first time in the history of the Global Summit, Ukrainian cities have applied to participate. It was important for us to present the ongoing initiatives in Khmelnytskyi: the creation of the Goofy Center and the development of the Green City Action Plan. The victory was a pleasant surprise and a great honour. Khmelnytskyi aptly demonstrated how to bring changes and take actions following an open government course and taking care of the environment. Now other cities come to us to learn and we are open to share our experience and develop further,” <\/em>comments Oleksandr Simchyshyn, mayor of Khmelnytskyi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cModernization of solid waste infrastructure in Khmelnytskyi would help the city to achieve Ukrainian waste management strategy, European Circular economy tasks and Zero waste ideology. The project includes the construction of a new landfill, rehabilitation of the existing landfill including, installation of a new joint leachate treatment system, construction of a materials recovery facility, and supply of new landfill equipment,\u201d <\/em>says Sigitas Rinkevicius, project manager and Egis expert<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Over the last few years, striving to become greener, smarter and more sustainable, Ukrainian cities have been applying for various international programs and initiatives. For instance, Ukraine has more participating cities in the EBRD Green Cities program than any other economy to date [1]<\/a>. With financial support from the EBRD and consultancy expert advice, the cities establish a sustainable vision for the future for their residents. For instance, Dnipro cooperates with Egis as a technical consultant to develop and implement a tailor-made Green City Action Plan. Egis experts also greatly contributed to the successful implementation of the local sustainable public transport, wastewater treatment, district heating projects in Lviv, for which the city won the EBRD Sustainability Awards last year.<\/p>\n About Open Government Partnership Summit and Award<\/strong><\/p>\n The OGP Global Summit is an annual event that in 2021 took place in Seoul, the Republic of Korea on December 15-17. The event is organized by Open Government Partnership, a multi-stakeholder initiative focused on improving government transparency and accountability, anti-corruption, digital innovation and governance, public participation and civic space.
