Yesterday, November 11, the European Business Association hosted the EBA Sustainable Development Day for the second time. The event was attended by about 170 participants, including top managers of the biggest budget-generating companies of Ukraine, representatives of the European Union, MPs, representatives of relevant ministries and agencies, as well as international experts from UNDP and the UN Global Compact.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event began with a discussion of the results of the EBA Sustainable Development Index \u2013 the study conducted by the European Business Association with the support of Naftogaz of Ukraine and Kyiv National University of Trade and Economics. Thus, the study demonstrates that 96% of EBA member companies are committed to the Sustainable Development Goals, and the environmental issues are a priority in business. Companies invest hundreds of millions of hryvnias annually, but they report that there are also regulatory barriers to such kind of investment.\u00a0<\/span>Ruslan Strilets<\/span><\/strong>, Acting Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine noted that the Ministry of Environment acknowledges the importance of having a dialogue with businesses that are committed to sustainability. According to him, the digitalization of the environmental sphere can be an effective way to reduce regulatory pressure on the business. At the same time, the business community drew attention to other environmental issues and offered to hold a separate meeting with Ruslan Strilets shortly and discuss the most important environmental issues for business. We hope it will happen promptly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tetiana Lomakina<\/span><\/strong>, Advisor \u2013 Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for the Barrier-Free Environment, expressed her readiness to support responsible business in the implementation of sustainable development projects and invited First Lady Olena Zelenska to join the initiative “Business without Barriers”, and\u00a0<\/span>Serhii Taruta<\/span><\/strong>, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Barriers to Economic Development, invited business to join the parliamentary hearings at the Committee which are scheduled for December 15 and devoted to the discussion of the strategy of sustainable development of Ukraine until 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n

Viktoriia Hryb<\/span><\/strong>, a member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy and Utilities, emphasized the social component of sustainable development,\u00a0<\/span>Lyudmyla Buimister<\/span><\/strong>, Chair of the Subcommittee on Competition and Equal Business Conduct of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Development, stressed the need to ensure a reasonable balance between environment and economy which are a basis for sustainable development.\u00a0<\/span>Kyrylo Kryvolap,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Executive Director of the Center for Economic Recovery, Adviser to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, reminded that the National Economic Strategy 2030 fully takes into account the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

International experts are also convinced that business and the state should unite their efforts for the sustainable development of Ukraine. According to\u00a0<\/span>Chloe Allio<\/span><\/strong>, Head of Section \u2013 Operations \u2013 Economic Cooperation, Energy, Infrastructure and Environment in the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine, the EU is ready to support Ukraine in creating a climate policy architecture, provided that the funds it collects from the largest corporate emitters of CO2 will be reinvested in the economy, especially in its “green” transition.\u00a0<\/span>Oleksandr Muliar<\/span><\/strong>, Manager of UNDP Supporting Green Recovery in Ukraine Project, talked about the signing of a memorandum between UNDP and the State Agency for Energy Efficiency,\u00a0<\/span>Tetiana Sakharuk<\/span><\/strong>, Director of Global Compact Representative Office in Ukraine, stressed the importance of government-business partnerships and spoke for the inclusion of business cases to the next editions of the National Report on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides, an analysis of the contribution of the EBA Committee on Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development member companies was presented at the event. In total, despite the pandemic, the member companies spent UAH 22.1 billion on SDGs in 2020 which is 28% more than in 2019. The main areas for investment were environmental protection \u2013 UAH 15.2 billion, local community development \u2013 UAH 1.2 billion and education and staff development \u2013 UAH 4.3 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n

In support of this, 11 member companies of the EBA Committee on Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development shared their practical cases in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The companies talked about strategies for achieving carbon neutrality through chemical recycling (BASF), regional transformations (DTEK), the use of gas as a transition fuel (Naftogaz), the introduction of the best available technologies and management methods in the woodworking sector (Kronospan) and innovative methods in metallurgy, namely -production of DR-pellets with an iron content of 67% and the transition to alternative energy sources (Ferrexpo). Particular attention was paid to the growing role of quality education as a key element in the effective transformation of traditional industries (ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih and Interpipe), community development and support (Ukrenergo and Metinvest), and the role of sustainable development communications in shaping the company’s image (Kernel).<\/span><\/p>\n
