The discussion will be focused on the current state of development of the EU Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), as well as the possible impact of this regulation on Ukrainian business.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2019, the European Commission announced the European Green Course which aims at enhancing the EU&#8217;s climate ambitions. At the same time, this could lead to a widening gap between different countries in their efforts to achieve climate neutrality on the European continent by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>The EU cross border carbon adjustment mechanism can be a possible solution to ensure equal competitive conditions for all market participants and to prevent the relocation of carbon-intensive industries to countries with less stringent climate requirements. Border carbon adjustments will aim at alleviating the negative effects of uneven and inconsistent climate policies. This can be achieved by applying tariffs or other fiscal regulations to goods imported into the EU. Also, it is possible to extend certain regulatory requirements, namely, the greenhouse gas emission allowance trading system (ETS) for imported products.<\/p>\n<p>The final design of the border carbon adjustment mechanism is not yet available, and the European Commission is currently holding a public discussion of this initiative.<\/p>\n<p>On September 17, 2020, there will be an online forum to bring together European and Ukrainian experts on climate, energy, and trade, so that they can discuss the opportunities and risks that await Ukraine in case the carbon border adjustment initiative is implemented.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be focused on raising awareness about new tools for achieving EU climate goals and Ukraine&#8217;s actions in protecting and supporting domestic producers.<\/p>\n<p>More details about the meeting will be available soon!
