Yesterday, representatives of the EBA Committee for Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development took part in an extended meeting of the Expert Council of the Ministry of Energy to update the National Determined Contribution (NDC) of Ukraine to the Paris Agreement. The National Determined Contribution is a document by which the state reaffirms its commitment to combating climate change, including setting targets for greenhouse gas emissions reduction.<\/span><\/p>\n During the meeting, there was a presentation of 4 forecast scenarios<\/strong> for the second NDC of Ukraine, after which all invited participants could ask questions or express their comments and suggestions on each of the digital simulations. Representatives of the European Business Association drew attention to 4 aspects that should be taken into account in the formation of Ukraine\u2019s international climate obligations, namely:<\/span><\/p>\n As a result, the participants agreed that some issues important for the formation of Ukraine’s climate commitments are primarily related to the economic crisis caused by the quarantine measures to counter the spread of COVID-19 and the energy crisis. Therefore, they need to be further elaborated by profile working groups of the Expert Council.<\/span><\/p>\n It was the second meeting of the business community with the authorities to discuss Ukraine’s participation in international climate policy. At the end of May, a web dialogue was held on the basis of the EBA Committee between representatives of the government, European institutions, and business which resulted in the agreement to develop a platform for joint work on carbon price adjustment mechanism, NDCs and the European Green Agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n The European Business Association thanks to the Ministry of Energy for the opportunity to be involved in updating the state environmental policy and will soon share proposals from businesses regarding the National Determined Contribution.<\/span><\/p>\n Among participants of the meeting were members of the Expert Council headed by Mr. Serhiy Chekh<\/strong>, members of the working group on environmental protection and climate change headed by Ms. Svitlana Hrynchuk<\/strong>, Acting Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine\u2013 Ms. Iryna Stavchuk<\/strong>, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Protection of Ukraine for European Integration \u2013 Mr. Yaroslav Demchenkov<\/strong>, Head of the Expert Group of the Project \u201cSupport to the Government of Ukraine on updating its Nationally Determined Contribution\u201d \u2013 Ms.\u00a0<\/span>Natalia Kushko<\/strong>, a leading researcher of the NASU Institute of Economics and Forecasting\u00a0 \u2013 Mr. Oleksandr Dyachuk<\/strong>, also the representatives of the EBRD, business and the public sector.<\/p>\n For the reference:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n In 2015, 194 countries and the European Union created the Paris Climate Agreement, in which they committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change. One of the requirements of the Agreement was the development of the so-called nationally determined contribution.
