Mine new ideas for coal mono cities of Chervonohrad and Myrnohrad!

10/ 11/ 2021
While Ukraine is moving towards decarbonization which is going to benefit the country economically, the closure of coal mines and coal production is inevitable. The closure, evidently, will entail drastic changes to the life of coal mono cities as the latter provides the largest part of local employment, cities’ income, energy supply and ecological concerns. On 03 - 05.12.21, SYNCHRO SPACE together with the Ukrainian league of industrialists and entrepreneurs, under the support of the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine and the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, will conduct a Hackathon for coal mining cities with the aim of creating solutions for Chervonohrad and Myrnohrad.   As  in the nearest future these cities they are going to live through the shut down of mines, there is an urgent need of addressing such issues as:: The revitalisation of the territories on the basis of former coal mines infrastructure, creation of new tourist clusters and arranging the way to account for industrial heritage as a part of the European route of industrial heritage — ERIH Dealing with cities’ ecological concerns, e.g. consequences of coal production Managing cities’ energy problems Projects are to be developed under the mentorship of Ukrainian and international experts. For startups and teams of experts  — architects, designers, urbanists, IT developers, ecologists, etc. – it is a possibility to show their professional skills and implement their solutions. For local, Ukrainian and international teams of business initiators – it is a possibility to join the process of city transformations and generate new business ideals. For scientists working in technology and innovations, it is possible to check the applicability of their research and hypotheses. HACKATHON FOR COAL CITIES is a part of the UNDP research ‘Butterfly Effect: pilot research that can provoke a transformation of Ukrainian coal cities’. The Hackathon’s programme includes:: Excursion around the mine territory and teams’ communication with stakeholders; Presentation of the results of UNDP research П; Expert lectures touching the hackathon’s topic and exciting debate panel; Nonstop 24-hour teams competition; Presentation of the projects to the jury, evaluation, announcement of the result — the jury, with the Minister of Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Chernyshov as its head, will choose the best projects. At the same time, representatives of ministries, local authorities and international experts will be a part of the jury composition. Hackathon solutions will be created for the purpose of trying them out in Chervonohrad and Myrnohrad, potentially downscaling further in other coal cities. We are inviting everyone whose ideas or projects can improve the urban environment of Chervonohrad and Myrnohrad to participate in OUR HACKATHON FOR COAL CITIES and join the initiative of transforming them. International organisations will support the piloting of the most interesting solutions. Participation is free of charge under the condition of prior registration and passing the selection. Transportation, living costs and food expenses during the hackathon will be reimbursed for the selected teams who would like to participate offline! Look up the details, register via our website, and follow the news through the event’s Facebook page. Let’s unite our efforts to create the cities of the future!
